Business WordSmiths, Inc. is a Portland, Oregon based business writing company. We help businesses and independent entrepreneurs sell themselves, their services, and their products.
Our primary focus is on marketing and sales, but we are by no means an advertising agency. No, we’re much too small and unimportant to claim that lofty title. All we do is write copy (online and offline) that creates sales. It’s a value, thing if you know what I mean. It’s not about fancy words or graphics. We simply get curious about what people really want and speak directly to that. Who needs an ego when you can be incredibly successful by providing real value?
We write web copy, sales letters, white papers, special reports, articles, and even books if it helps people with their businesses. What’s really cool about this work is the learning never stops. We have to stay pace with the speed of the Internet – search engine optimization, portal creation, social bookmarking, Virtual Real Estate, and a half dozen other things you’ve probably never heard of. That’s OK. We stay on top of it so you don’t have to.
Here’s who we are:
Sid Smith

Sid is the founder and principal of Business WordSmiths (clever name, don't you think?) His background isn't what you might consider common for a writer. With his undergraduate degree in Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science, Sid broke into the computer field long before anyone had ever heard the term "geek." Amazingly, he landed his first job because of his writing skills, and not his knowledge of programming language. His new boss said: "I loved your cover letter so much, I never even looked at your resume."
Sid moved from computer job to computer job, mostly working as a consultant, before settling into a wonderful career with Hewlett-Packard as a field consultant. It was there he first found the pleasure of writing, starting up a special newsletter and winning multi-million dollar proposals through his knack for writing copy.
In spite clues that could have pointed Sid to copywriting much sooner, he remained in the safe arms of HP... perhaps for a little too long. Finally, sure that he wanted to do something else, but not sure what it was, he went on to earn a Masters in Counseling Psychology. It was there that one professor said somewhat jokingly, "You really should become a writer. Give up this counseling idea."
Instead, Sid went into marketing, primarily as a business coach. But this experience, along with his knowledge of human psychology, his analytical skills, and his sales skills only made it easier for Sid to transition to full time writing.
Starting with ghostwriting, Sid quickly moved to copywriting. Since several of his clients (business people) wanted to write books, Sid immersed himself into the world of writing and publishing books, even forming his own small publishing company (just for clients, but thanks for asking).
Out of that came this web site, a site for authors and would-be writers.
In the mean time, Sid continues with his day job as a direct response and web copywriter - Business WordSmiths, Inc.
