Dear Sid,
I just wanted to say \"thank you\" for the information for beginners. There are so many websites out there with the \"secrets\" one must purchase. However, it is rare to find a website that truly offers the information one needs; a direct answer. You have given many people a true starting point, and for that, we are all truly grateful! Thank you so much!

The Details...

Mr. Smith:

I have found your article very helpful, honest and encouraging yet I am still left with a couple of questions on some details. See I am a current colelge student, just 20 years old and I am an American living overseas. I\'ve read a few books in my genre of choice, clearly not enough but some, and I suppose I could use a little more realism. I am not concerned if it takes me a lifetime, so be it! I am more concerned about help. There are no writers groups where I am and while I am taking my share of writting classes, I am still a business major interested in writing about life. I want my book to pull from my insides but where can I find support when needed when I am in such a situation.
Thank you for all your time,
Please know that you are a true help!

Hello, I\'m not sure if you received the previous email so here it is again.

:D
I wrote a book about a year ago, Actually I have three that I have written two are just about complete, but I picked one up because I know this is what I should be doing. I actually feared the process, I said to myself I don\'t know where to begin, someone may try to take advantage of me because I am just clueless as it relates to publishing etc... But I realize you have to spend money to make money whether someone gets you or not. I just wanted to tell you that after reading your article I am encouraged. You seem to be as real as real can get. Thank you for persevering and helping people like me. I am a beginner and you are the first name that I can refer to as helping me get started again. That sounds like a title to me...(Helping Me Get Started Again) (*_*)

this is just about the encouragement I\'ve needed. im 14 and I love to write. im at the beginning of my first novel and am well, pretty discouraged. I\'ve tried to read novels by authors that I aspire to be like for inspiration yet it is somewhat saddening as I always feel \'I\'ll never get there\'.
however, reading your article has given me the push I need and although I am not as affluent as I would wish to be, I\'m gonna beg my parents to invest in me.

That\'s wonderful! I\'d start locally. See if you can get her school to help get it published. Perhaps the school board can use it as a promotion. Send a copy to the editor of your newspaper. If you live in a large enough city, find your local writer\'s group and ask them to help. See if your local coffee shops (Starbucks?) will help. Get a copy printed and bound at Kinkos and start showing it around. You never know what delightful things might happen!

Ok, But what if you don\'t want to write a book but have usefull infromation that may help people?? I\'ve thought about writing but don\'t have it in me, I like to journal my thoughts down but that is it, About 1 year and 7 months ago I had gastric Bi-pass surgery and it has help hugely, I have set back and watched others do the sane and fail and fail and fail time after time. I won\'t let it happen to me, I have taken on a life long dream since I was 7 to go into competitive body building and every one tells me It can\'t be done, But I\'m going to prove them wrong!!! Before the surgery they gave me 9 month at the most to live because of so many health complications yet I\'m still here and plan to stay here for a very long time, and i want to help others either by example or what ever, i think that by writing a book and try to inspire others from the book would be great, but I\'m not a writer nor want to take the time to write, So the question is who do you turn to?? do you just find some one to write it?? Do you just dictate your thoughts to some one ??? No Idea of where t start

Hi Sid,
I guess I feel a little wary of sending an outline for a book, few chapters or even a whole manuscript to a publisher-to someone I\'ve never met- and then trust that the title or some of the content or even the whole book won\'t be copied, or stolen. Am I too paranoid? Any ideas on how to protect your work?
Thanks,

If you really want to write WRITE ALREADY!I don\'t mean to be rude but if you want to write put your thoughts down on paper and write a manuscript.About where to turn it to you should check the web and find someone to turn it in to.I\'m sure people would like to read about your experencenes you had before, during, and after your sugery.Yes a 12 year old is telling you this.

If you don\'t like to write, don\'t want to write, or think you can\'t write, then your only real option is to hire what\'s called a \"Ghostwriter.\" It\'s estimated that 50 to 75 percent of nonfiction books are at least partially ghostwritten (written by someone other than the author). Figure $10,000 and up to have your book ghostwritten. However, in your case I\'d wait until after you\'ve accomplished your dream. Simply living longer than doctors project isn\'t unusual.

Yes, you\'re too paranoid. Publishers don\'t have the time or money to steal ideas. Besides, copyright law (in the USA) prohibits them from doing so and they know it. Worse case, if you think your idea is that brilliant and will make you tons of money, finish your book and sell it on the Internet as a test run.
I want to compose a book on mentors. What type of book is this: fiction or non-fiction.
It would be non-fiction if you write a factual book based on your experience. It\'s fiction if you make stuff up. There is also \"creative nonfiction\" - a hybrid that allows for \"creatively\" retelling stories as you can best remember them. If you include stories about mentors and want the book to be nonfiction, be sure to get their permission in writing. This can also be a memoir if you\'re simply writing about your personal experiences.

Thank you for the info,I am stuck with the notion of how I might label my piece. You did mention in a previous reply that,if you are writing facts about your own personal experiences then the piece would be factual, but what if your not sure? because some of the experiences come from your every-day life, while others come from your dreams, but they all feel like they are my experiences and have happened to me. I have been writing everything down, especially when I wakeup,a lot of it makes more sense once I have expanded on my notes. All I know is that I need to get all of this out of my head or it will explode. My Questions to you are, what I have described does it sound like fact or fiction? How can I organize my material?Ghostwriter?

John, there are a few novel-writing software packages available, but I\'m not sure they\'ll help. Their purpose is to help structure a book, develop your characters, and deal with the plot line. You might consider joining a local writing group or take a local class. Many writing conferences have special sessions on writing personal story. There are also several books available on writing personal story - just do a search for \"writing personal story.\" Another approach is to buy a stack of 4x6 index cards. Put your story onto the index cards, and then keep moving them around until you have a structure that works.

Self Confidence

Hello, I am 13 year old girl who can pick up a pencil and have a mind blowing piece of work in front of her. I have a teacher who thinks i am set to be a writer, and i do believe i am good at it. But i have no self confidence, i dont. I pick up a pencil write four hundred pages and discard 399 of them because they were meaning less. Anyway I\'ve had this plot/ outline if you will stuck inside my head for awhile, its completely and utterly suffocating. I would absolutly love for it to unfold write before my eyes on a piece of paper, but i am afraid to start. Any advice? I know authors often discard many of their writings but this one is a keeper i can feel it.

Thanks,
Living in a small town bound to be discovered.

To tell the truth Lexi, I am EXACTLY like you, I\'ve known I\'ve wanted to be a writer for ages (my teachers more or less have encouraged me, and I\'ve even met with people who are interested in my writing career) but yet everytime I write more than a few pages I get discouraged about the direction of my story. I am 13 just like you and already I\'ve started about 4 books and left them all halfway because I get so disparaged so early on. Hopefully I\'ll grow out of this predicament once I mature, and I wish you all the best.

Reading your article was a complete waste of time, and if I did not care about the other people who might accidentally wander on to this site, this reply would be a waste of time too. Seriously, just because you had to pay so much money, and blah, blah, blah, does not mean that every one is an idiot and has to give up their life savings to get a clue about writing. Unfortunately, some people may mistake your lack of talent and resentment for past hardships for being witty and blunt.

Can\'t please everyone, can we? I\'m sorry you feel this way, but I think you missed the point. Most of the resources I recommended are free or low cost - go to the library, join a writing group, etc. I don\'t expect anyone to spend a pile of money on classes and software. But if you want to get good at anything, you\'ll have to do a little work. That\'s the point. There isn\'t a magic writing bullet. Learn the basics and build from there through as much practice as it takes. Oh, and the tone of this article was intentional to create an emotional response. Guess it worked!

I think that write a technical book is very different from romance of fiction books.

I am an engineer pursuing PhD and I want to publish a book with part of the 20 years of experience I have in the specific field of maintenance and reliability.

Organize ideas and show technical information seems to be easier to me than write any other kind of book. So i would like to know if you have ant recomendation regards writing technical books.

You are correct in saying that a nonfiction (technical) book is different. There are also many similarities. You need a clear outline. You need to pay attention to the reader and what will keep the reader interested. You need to show, not tell, avoid adverbs, use strong, not weak verbs, etc. Unless you are writing a technical manual, a nonfiction book will still have many elements of fiction writing. Do an Amazon search for books on writing nonfiction (there are several). If you want your book to be read, then pay attention to making it interesting for the reader.

I have been thinking for the past two years on writing a book being married to a NYPD Sargeant for 19 years and the physical and mental abuse I went through and facing the Brothers who stick together. Reason why I should have stated \"I Don\'t instead of I do\". I shall be following the guidelines of a book my Aunt wrote (but never published) as she wanted it for the family only. My book I want people to know what it was like to be married to a cop.
I know you put your thoughts down and go from their. I know it shall take a long time and yes your webpage was educational but knowing what needs to be done. Thanks

One thing you might want to do is to identify your goals for your book. Do you want to sell it to a publisher, or self-publish your book? How many books would you like to sell? Do you want it to reach a wide or narrow audience?

Then, think about who might want to read about life with a copy. If you can identify your target market - the people who would want to read such a book, then get into their heads before you write the book. What would most interest them? What do they want to hear about? Funny stories? Wild chases? Death-defying acts? Romance? Love?

Unless you\'re famous or a celebrity, a memoir is a tough sell to publishers. You need to clearly identify your target market about their primary interests.

Motivational & Encouragement

I would like to write motivational books, books on encouragement, & parents dealing with children w/special needs. I have been a caregiver and single parent of two children with sickle cell disease. Long story short I am also in ministry and feel a special concentration in the motivational ministry for Youth & Young Adult women. I am already doing some local motivational speaking but am trying to launch a national motivational platform. I feel that I also have several books inside of me based on my life experiences and what I have had to endure as a divorced, single parent caregiver and still trying to come up thru the ranks in the church as a female ministry. I am glad that I ran across your website and your words of encouragement. For me I am best helped when people \"cut to the chase\" and not sugar coat things. I need someone who will tell me like it is and what I need to know to move from where I am to where I need to be. I am glad that you said to read books on the genre that I am interested in and to take a writing class. I too have wondered where do I start and how do I start. Do you have any words of wisdom to help catapult me into beginning my writings. I do realize that getting starting on my book is harder than finishing it.

Debra,

Pick one topic and one focus. The same goes for your speaking career. The best thing to do is narrow your focus to one important and relevant topic. Write about it, read about it. Become \"the\" expert in it. Talk about it. Gather all the stories, tips and techniques you can about it. Then, just sit down one weekend (that\'s how long it can take) and create an outline for your book. If you\'ve immersed yourself in the subject matter, a weekend is all it will take to create the outline. Then spend time adding details to your outline. And as you write, remember this: show, don\'t tell. Show what you mean by example, through stories, or visual images. Best wishes.

Thank you for actually answering my email. I want to make sure I understand you. When you say \"show, don\'t tell\" What exactly do you mean? I am thinking that you mean show thru analogies or writing so that the reader actually feels what I\'ve gone through and those who it is applicable to can relate on a more personable level? I think based on what your reply states, that I should begin with books that will encourage/motivate those who are caregivers. Motivate my readers to realize & pursue their dreams, visions, and aspirations. I hope I am not reading more into your response than is intended. Also when you use the word outline do you mean the TABLE OF CONTENTS?

Yes, you\'ve got it. Show through stories and examples. Tell: \"Parenting children with sickle cell is hard.\" Show: \"Andrea sidled up to me and asked, \'Mama... am I OK?\' I didn\'t know what to say...\"

Start with the place where you have the most experience and enthusiasm. The outline is more detailed than a table of contents, but it starts with the TOC.

Mature Books

Hi Sid,
Thanks for your \"No Bull Info\". I appreciate the fact that you don\'t sugarcoat your advise. I have a question myself.
I Just started writing a book, I have wanted to do so for years, and whenever I sat to actually do it, I went blank. Well then just last week, words suddenly started to appear on my computer screen and I have not quit typing yet. However, I have to admit what I am writing is quite mature, not quite X-rated but more like a rated R or a little worse of a movie. I\'ve always been a BIG reader and I know this will really grab any readers attention, but Will I have trouble publishing a book like this?

One more question...I\'ve heard alot about writing for no more than two hours a day, I\'ve been putting in around 8 or more and staying up all night. But the ideas are just flowing. Should I roll with it or slow down before I get burnt out?

Thank you again for your sincerity Sid.

With warm regards,

Hey, there are plenty of \"mature\" books on the market. There\'s a whole genre called \"erotica\" that you might want to investigate.

Who told you to only write for 2 hours a day? Many writers keep a strict 6-8 hour schedule. Write as long and as much as you like. There are NO rules when it comes to creativity. But keep in mind that it\'s normal to go through several tough edits before you send your book to a publisher. Let it all out now, then go back later and clean it up (figure on at least 6 complete edits). Keep at it! Don\'t stop until you\'re done with the first draft, and don\'t worry about how it all fits together for now.

Generally not, but it\'s up to you. The payment administration would be a nightmare! At a minimum you must have them sign a release form for the story. What you\'re describing is exactly what the authors of the \"Chicken Soup\" series did, and quite successfully.

i dont even know what to say after reading your article. you have completely blown the soft cushion my teachers have created over the years telling me that i am a great writer and i can write what ever i wish. but you are so right i can make a book appear before my eyes by wishing, ive been trying to write the same book since i was thirdteen i am now eighteen and havent even done one chapter. i stated this book because i always want to write, all the time. but im going to admit im lazy, my spelling is horrible amd writters block becomes me. you have no idea how many times i have started the same book, how many times i´ve rewritten it. another thing is that my friend and i have sooooo many different vrews on the story, but basicly i creat it and she writes in on paper but i hate the way she writes down my thoughts, once on paper they no longer belong to me. they no longer feel as if thats what i want to write. thank you for your advice and i´ll try6 my best to follow your advice because i belive that it is a great story is just that i have it all in my head snd cant put all on paper. WHY IS IT SO HARD TO WRITE when is al i want to do. pardon my spelling is not that great.
WHY IS IT SO HARD TO WRITE?
Annie, writing is not hard. We only make it hard because we a) hate failure; b) think we should write like pros; or c) we just plain think it is hard. You\'re only 18, but your love of writing will keep you going. Set aside about 1 hour a day (same time of day) and write without help. Just allow the story to unfold. Be surprised by what the characters decide to do or say. Get to know your characters and let them begin to dictate the story. This takes a LOT of pressure off you to figure things out. Crazy as it may seem, the really works. Mostly, have fun. Don\'t let anyone read your work until you\'ve written the whole thing and gone through one complete edit. If it takes you the next year or two, then so be it. Good luck.

World Trade Center Veteran

Sid,

I just retired and I\'m interested in writing a book on my Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experiences. To hi-light a little bit; I was at the World Trade Center on 911 as EOD support to the Secret Service for the anuual United Nations meeting which of course did not take on time that year. We were on our way to the WTC #7 building for our 9AM EOD inbrief.
The first plane struck as we were departing the subway under the twin towers. We had just left the main center and were standing across the street when the second plane struck. Our small group of five stayed inside the the cordoned area after showing our credentials to the local police and helped keep back crowds and evacuate personnel from the buildings. I remained in the are to give first aid and was about 75 yards away when the first tower fell. I went back in to the sight after the dust cloud would allow movement to help people who had sought shelter from under vehicles and such.
Shortly thereafter the second building fell when I was again only about 75 yards away. I stayed on sight for some time until an FBI agent I met at the scene escorted me to their field office up the street to get my eyes washed out and call my wife and EOD command.
Since that time I have also deployed to Iraq in 2003 at the start of the war, deployed in Um Qasr as an EOD diver to clear minefields in the river and port area.
September of this year marked my 25th year in the Navy and with the recent removal of a pituitary brain tumor, it looked like a good time to go ahead and retire, especially since the military doctors said my diving days were over. My health is getting better now, but most days are still a challenge.
The events of 911 still seem to haunt me and I feel like I need to put what I saw and felt that day to words. I thought that maybe with my EOD perspective and still extremely positive outlook on life that it would provide an interesting groundfloor look at what direction the current world events are taking our country.
Please let me know what you think about this idea and any advice you can give. The events I\'ve been involved wtih and witness to these past few years just seem to be more than coincidence in my life, and I feel that writing about them and sharing them with others is a driving force right now coming from within me. I have read your advice and comments above and am already ordering at least two of the books you recommended.

Thank your for your time,
Jim
Please let me know what you think about this idea and any advice you can give.
Hi Jim,

What a fascinating life you\'ve lived. In my humble opinion, I feel a book about your experiences would do well. Remember that controversy sells, so see what kind of unique angle you can take on the events that would create some controversy. Of course you\'d have to do this without getting yourself in legal trouble! If you\'ve got a few extra dollars, I\'d hire an experienced ghostwriter to help you pitch your book idea to literary agents. The agent will take 15% of your book advance, but it\'s worth it. You can also pick up some books on writing query letters and nonfiction book proposals. I\'d pitch the idea first and see who bites. But really think about what controversial angle you want to take. Or, if not controversial, then something that challenges people\'s beliefs and opinions about the war and life. Best of luck!

The darkened room had already begun to give off a most depressing aura, and the Brayer twins blended in right with it. Their bodies were cut up into impossibly small pieces; their parts seemed hopelessly lost to one another though they were piled densely atop a grotesquely formed pile together. The twins\'s eyes were even sliced in halves and put atop the pile, as if the murderer wanted to make it difficult for them to reach heaven\'s gate.

The oldest of the long since killed twins, had her jaw broken in several separate places. Her neck had been completly disentegrated and, along with it, her head now sat up on the west wall of the murder room; A trail of blood leading there somewhat told the sad story of her death. Her brother\'s was a melancholy story too. His body was mostly left whole, except for his ears; they had been taken off and thrown atop the mentioned pile. Then they had been taken up again and away from the murder site.

I FIND WRITING TO BE VERY EASY, IN FACT I EVEN GET DONE WITH READING DIFFERENT BOOKS IN LESS THAN THREE DAYS, IF I LIKE THE BOOK. I GUESS IT\'S BECAUSE SOME HAVE A BETTER VOCABULARY THAN OTHERS AND SOME KNOW MORE WORDS THAN OTHERS AND SOME WRITE FASTER THAN OTHERS AND SOME ARE JUST PLAIN SMARTER THAN OTHERS.
I\'ve heard alot about writing for no more than two hours a day, I\'ve been putting in around 8 or more and staying up all night. But the ideas are just flowing. Should I roll with it or slow down before I get burnt out?
Hey, if it\'s flowing, then go with the flow. If you need a break, then take a break. One great writer I know writes for 33 minutes then takes a 5-minute stretch break before going back. He says it improves his writing considerably.

Go to the library/book store and search for books on freelance writing or becoming a freelance writer. That\'s the field you\'re aiming at. There are hundreds of books on the subject, as well as a huge book on freelance writing markets.

If you can write a QUALITY book in a year, then by all means go for it. It\'s one thing to spout off about how amazing you are, and it\'s quite another to actually finish a well-written book. Come back and tell us about your book AFTER you\'ve written it.

I write for fun, but I\'ve always wanted to finish a novel (I have started writing a novel then started another one but never finished). I think I\'m going to try setting aside 15 minutes every day (like you suggested) and write my novel so i\'ll get it finished :)

Hi Sid

Yes, I have been thinking of writing a autobiography about my childhood abuse, alcoholism, drug abuse and everything that has happened in my life so others know they are not alone in a dysfunctional world. I am prepared to spend a long time on this, but it needs to be done and it needs to be done right.

Any feedback is appreciated.

The information and resources this website has to offer, is amazing. Your brutal honesty is perfect for people who just need to know what it takes to become a writer without the sugar-coating. Thank you for taking the time to put together this resource for beginners who aren\'t sure where to go for information, or where to begin in there writing career. I have found this website to be most helpful. In fact, I have saved this site to my favorites to return back to when I need more direction. I plan to take a few classes to grow as a writer and just go for it! I have a passion for writing and have decided writing a book is the one thing I wish to accomplish in my lifetime. (Even if I am the only one who reads it!!)

I dont want to write a book but I would like to find out what makes some books so intrigueing and some people such great writers
What is the formula to keep the reader gripped to each page?
