A good source of information on publishing children\'s books is Harold Underdown\'s web site - www.underdown.org. He\'s a children\'s book editor.

With any self-publishing company, you\'ll own the rights. If you publish through any traditional publisher, it totally depends on the contract you negotiate. Generally, they\'ll want everything and will give you nothing. Be sure to read the contract thoroughly. Hire an attorney or a literary agent.

Sorry... no can do. You\'ll have to do a little leg work on your own. Just go to your library, the book store, or Amazon and look for books similar to what you\'re writing. See who published the book. Then write them a killer proposal and see what happens. They\'ll want a few sample chapters to see if your writing is up to their standards.

Fantasy Books - (e.g. Potter,

Hi,

I am in the process of penning a fantasy book. It is not, however, a complete fantasy as in LOTR (where the whole story is based in the fantasy world), but more akin to Potter where it has parts of the story in the real world. Another good comparison would be Peter Pan (Hook) where it starts in the real world but then goes into the fantasy world at a later point.

Do you have any publishing info for this type of book?

This is my first port of call for research so obvioulsy I have a mountain to do yet.

Thanks,
Ben.

Thank you for your article. I am curious as to the reality (and possibility) of becoming a best selling author via self publishing. Just how willing are the bookstores to 1) take in a first time author\'s book 2)who is self published?
I have completed two contemporary novels and have gone the traditional publisher/agent querying route but found it extremely frustrating. Hence I am finally considering self publishing.
Thanks for your response.
Just how willing are the bookstores to 1) take in a first time author\'s book 2)who is self published?
Judy
Great question, Judy! Bookstores are less hesitant about self-published books than in previous years. Remember that they have limited shelf space and their #1 job is to sell books. So, they sell the best space to publishers. Everything else is stocked according to general demand. Thus, whether you\'ve got a traditional publisher or you do it yourself, as an unknown author the onus of marketing and selling falls on your shoulders. Creativity and perseverance are the keys to marketing anything, and books are no exception. I encourage authors to learn as much about marketing as possible, especially internet marketing. If you can sell books and create buzz about your book, then the bookstores will stock your book. It\'s as simple as that.
I\'m under eighteen, but I have been told I\'m a very good writer. Is there much possibilty I can publish a book or poem?
The easy answer: Yes, of course.
The hard answer: You\'ll have to work hard, possibly suffer through a series of rejections, and keep at it because you love writing and know that you\'ve got a lot to share. Many young authors start writing at 15 or 16 and are published by their early 20\'s. Stay with it. Keep improving. Learn as you go. If you set the clear intention today that within 5 or 10 years you\'ll be published, and you do all you can to make it happen, then you WILL be published.

Your best bet is self-publishing, or to have it printed through one of the many printers you\'ll find online. Just search for \"Printing workbooks\" or \"printing companies\" (or similar). You\'ll find many options. Look for companies who will do \"Print on demand\" printing so that you don\'t have to print up thousands of copies up front.

Joe, as was suggested in the article, you should do some research on similar books. Many books have been written with similar stories, which is both positive and negative. Find publishers who print books like yours (go to the bookstore, Amazon, the Library - ask your librarian). Then, write a killer query letter and send it with a sample of your writing to the publishers (following their submission guidelines!!)

I am a student in High school and I have a short childrens story that I want published. My first question is will my age be a problem when I am trying to publish? Also, do publishers have different standards with childrens books? Or would I be better off just submitting it to a magazine?
*this article was EXTREMELY helpful, thanks!

I have a relative who has paid an advance to an author to write a book about his experiences in the holocaust. The author has written 2 chapters (about 30 pages) and claims he needs more money to continue as he needs to find a publisher now with only 2 chapters written so far. Is this the proper protocol that is followed in this business? I just want to make sure he isn\'t being scammed.

Honestly? Near zero to find a publisher who will pay you. 100% if you self-publish. But going through the process of submitting your manuscript with a proposal to RELEVANT publishers would be a worthwhile learning experience. And you never know....

Review the contract agreement CLOSELY. If you don\'t have an agreement, then take what the writer has done, cut your losses and run away fast. No. This is not typical. If you don\'t have a written agreement, then bad on you.

My advice: Use Word or equivalent word processing software to write the book. Then, hire a professional copy editor, a proofreader, and a professional book designer. Focus on writing. Leave the rest to the professionals.

A few friends of mine and I have been kicking around the idea of doing the oral history of the Mustang Ranch in Nevada. Having worked there for 10 years - I feel there is an interesting, eye-opening and somewhat sad story to be told. Having the book told from various view points of the women who have endured working at the Mustang, I don\'t see it being like any other \"hooker-book\". It won\'t be a glamorous-lifestyle read - it will be real and raw. I wonder if their is an audience for this type of book. Having been retired for 10 years, and having new friends, they are all morbidly fascinated by the tales of sex-for-money. Am I kidding myself when I believe others might be interested as well?

If your book is that good, contact Peter at Cold Tree Press (read the article). He\'ll do right by you. Or, if you\'ve got $1500 to spend on publishing, why not become your own publisher? $250 or so buys you a block of ISBN numbers. With the rest you can have a cover designed and self-publish through Lightning Source. Instead of \"receiving a royalty\" of 20-35% per sale, you keep ALL the profits after print costs (about $4 per book).

I would like to know what your opinion is concerning self-publication verses traditional. Which would you choose? I\'m leanding toward self-publishing but, some other things aren\'t clear. How would I even begin to self-publish? When should the work be copyrighted? How would I distribute the finsihed product? How would I advertise? How do I get ISBN numbers? Who edits the book? Sorry about all the questions, I\'m new at this.
