I don\'t want to give my book away (I\'m kind of secretive about it) but its a non-fiction sports book that would require alot of travel, and probably a significant amount of funding. How often, and how likely or unlikely is it for a publishing company to back a book like that from a first time author.
How often, and how likely or unlikely is it for a publishing company to back a book like that from a first time author.
It\'s always difficult for a first time author. They want to know: 1) Will the book make THEM money? 2) How well can YOU market and sell the book? 3) What are YOUR credentials? If you are \"somebody\" who is known in the industry, then your chances are much better. If you\'re unknown or lack the credentials, then your odds are slim, unless you can prove that your book will sell and make them money. That\'s the key: Money!

A question of genre...

Hi, I\'m 17 and finished my book (called Victory Gate) a few months ago. I\'ve been umming and ahing for some time now as to what to do with the thing.
The problem is, it doesn\'t slot neatly into any genre, making researching a suitable publisher difficult. I\'ll write a brief synopsis:
Christopher Minos, prisoner number B156, is a convict at Victory Gate prison. This is all he has ever known: at around 20, his whole life has been within these impenetrable walls. This is all he knows. As Pride Week approaches, Chris\'s friends Badley and Thom plan a daring escape attempt, while strange psychological tests are carried out on Chris. Eventually, they will discover what lies beyond Victory Gate, and unearth the prison\'s secrets, why it was built, and their role in it.

As you can see, it doesn\'t go into a synopsis terribly well, mostly because... it doesn\'t really have a genre. It is set in the future, but there are no cyborg prison guards - it could theoretically be classed as sci-fi, but that\'s not at all the focus. This is essentially a book about uncovering mysteries, and (eventually) society.
Do you know of any publishers particularly interested in such unusual products? I can see why publishers would turn this down, since it\'s not immediately obvious to the consumer what it actually IS.

Self-publishing is perhaps your best option, but sending query letters to a few publishers wouldn\'t hurt. See if you can find any similar books (poems by young people) and make a note of the publisher. Send them a letter along with a couple of your granddaughter\'s poems and see what happens. Otherwise, you can publish the poems yourself for not a lot of money at places like Lulu.
getting my book published be really pricey to get started?
If you budget for $1500-2000 to self-publish your book, you\'ll be in the right ball park (this includes having someone else design the cover and edit/format your book). If you do the cover design, editing and formatting yourself, you can self-publish your book for as little as $350. All self-publishing companies print books on demand (one at a time) so you should NEVER have to print a bunch of books at once. If any publisher tells you that you have to \"buy\" 2000 copies of your book up front, then run away as fast as you can.
I am a 13-year-old... Are there any publishers that would accept a 13-year-old\'s work?
Good question. Publishers generally look for \"seasoned\" authors who have previously published. Remember that the number one goal of a publisher is to make money. Your best bet is to look for an \"Indie\" publisher - a small publisher who is willing to gamble on a new author, and who might be willing to do more of the book marketing. Your greatest challenge, which may also be your greatest strength if you play things right, is marketing. If you can provide some proof or evidence that you can actively sell your book, then you\'ll have a much better chance of being published. Again, go to the bookstore, Amazon, or the library and look for books similar to yours. You can get the names of the publishers directly from the books. This is what I mean by \"doing your homework.\"

I am a crime scene tech for a city in the U.S. I had an idea to write a compellation book of not only interesting cases, but the everyday life and drama that goes on in a crime lab. What do I need to do as far as changing real names and case information? I know I\'ll need permission from my department, but I was more concerned with the legalities for civil matters, and what publishers like to do in cases like these.

Sounds like a fascinating book, and one that could be wildly popular. I would let the publisher handle this task for you. They\'ll tell you exactly what you need to do to either get permission or alter the story. I\'d put together a strong query letter and send it to publishers who publish similar books (nonfiction). There are many good books available on writing query letters. Or, you can hire a ghostwriter/consultant to write the letter for you. The timing is good for a book like this.

How to. . .

My non-fiction business book on product management is in its infancy (20 pages), so I\'d rather not divulge on the name now. I\'d like to the book to be no more than 150 pages.

I always thought that I should first finish the book and then contact the publishers, but you are advising the opposite. My book will also be tied to a website. Should I stop where I am, sketch the website concept and contact publishers before going farther?

Thanks so much for your recommendations.

It depends... You may be better off NOT going with a publisher if you\'re just using the book as leverage to expand your business. They take forever to put your book into print, and then only push it for a couple of months. However, pick up a book on writing nonfiction book proposals and give it a shot. This way, you\'ll only need a couple of sample chapters written. You can keep writing while the publisher is thinking about it. The web site is a whole other topic on which I could write a book.

Wondering...

Well, i\'m 16 and i live in Cuenca, Ecuador. I\'m writing the first draft of a novel (think it\'s a novel, anyway) about a guy\'s desire to be crazy. It\'s structured like a concept album, you know, like Sgt Peppers or the Wall: it doesn\'t follow the same narrative nor the same characters; its an insight about certain personalities that live within him and the conflicts that occur between them.

Well, is it possible to publish a foreign-language strange-novel fully by internet? Of course i don\'t have the needed self confidence (i\'m 16, for god\'s sake!), and yeah, i\'ve won a couple of national teen contests, but, does that count? should i, after i finish revising it, just go and send it to every internet based spanish publisher i have found? if i\'ve been rejected, should i actually self-publish it? should i wait, trying to get experience, defying my mom\'s thoughts of \"get a true ambition\" with... being stagnant?

Of course this text doesn\'t make any sense. Of course no answer will satisfy me. But, you know. What if.

Thanks.

Answer: Yes... look at independent (small) publishers. There a a couple of good small publisher associations who can provide you with a list of small publishers. Check out www.spannet.org.

I am turning seventee in December and have been writing short stories, poems and essays since i was in the first grade. I finally decided to write my first book and am eight chapters into it. I want to look for an illustartor and publisher... but not submit my work yet, as i am not done. However, people tell me that to just look for this information at such an early stage in the writing of my book is ridiculous. People tell me that I should focus on finishing my story first. I have also been told that having close friends and family members critiquing my book before it is copyrighted is also a bad idea. But these are people that I would trust with my life and I feel that the need for improvement is great... no matter how well you write. I do not want to submit a book to a publisher if it won\'t attract any readers and that is why I have other people critique it. Am i right or wrong in making these choices? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Do you have any idea how moch money i would make if it were a good book
You could make millions. You could also make absolutely nothing. If you\'re focused on the money instead of the writing, then write nonfiction books and become an entrepreneur. There is far more money in nonfiction than fiction.

You\'re certainly going against the grain, but there is no definitive \"right\" or \"wrong\" way to do anything. The question is whether or not what you\'re doing is EFFECTIVE. If the best way for you to finish your book is to employ an illustrator, then go for it. In most cases such a search at this point is little more than a diversion from the real work at hand- writing. Don\'t bother looking for a publisher until your book is written and fully edited. People you know will rarely give you an unbiased review of your book. Again, this more often than not creates a distraction from actually writing the book. Expect to complete at least 3 drafts BEFORE sending your book to an editor for review. Have an independent and experienced editor review your book before sending it to publishers.

Hi... Just a few questions so I can get turned in the right direction. I want to write a non-fiction book about a circumstance in my life that affects millions every day. Mostly I think it would be useful in ministry work and parents dealing with the same thing. My goal is to help children and paretns with this book. I have never written before and am not sure where to start...do I pitch the idea first or write it first then pitch it? Anything would be helpful. Thanks!

Hi, I\'m almost thirteen and I love writing, I\'m in the midle of a medieval fiction book. What I want to know is (1) if I need an editor where do I find one? My grammar isn\'t the best and I know that I need someone to help me in that department. (2) Is there anyone that will read my story and tell me if I\'m good enough to even go through with this since I don\'t have money to throw away if I\'m not good enough? I\'d love someone to tell me if I can do it or not, my teacher seems to think that I\'m great along with some friends but I don\'t want to waste money on something if I\'m not good enough. I\'ll continue to write whether or not, I just want to know if I\'m going to be able to get published. Thanks much.

Dear Sir/Madam

What are your thoughts on a travel book detailing backpacking experiences from South America, Indonesia and Russia. Is there a big market for this type of book??

I am planning further expeditions, treks, hikes etc. is it worth putting the experience down on paper in a biographical account...?

Broad question I know, any advice would be helpful.

I am nearly Fifteen Years old. I have been writing books, but never publishing. I wrote a book and thought it was horrid and dull. I am currently writing a book on a young male who is stuck on an island and has been sucked infused with strong and dark powers. He has the option of choosing to keep or throw away his powers. I won\'t spill to much out but he has to fight his two closest friends in order to stay alive. Alot more of it is more interesting then I have written here. I have done some \"Homework\" and none of the sites I have visited are quite \"Professional\". I want to be able to self-publish the book, but the problem is getting money. I have a part time job, but I don\'t make enough to do a self-published book. And a question probably some may ask, if I were to self-publish the book, how would I go about selling the book, etc.

I have looked into \"Indie\" publishers but as I said, none seem very professional. I will try a few and see how it goes. The book I am nearly finished with is approximately 457 pages.

Thank you for your time,

Hi Sid,

I am in the process of writing a creative cocktail book. Along with recipes, there will be bartender stories, a few drink photos, and tips in the side bar. When I send sample chapters to a publisher, is it best if they have already been put together by a designer? Do you know if there is a computer program or template out there that would help me make it look \"pretty?\" I\'m a good writer, but design is not my forte. I am hoping you will tell me that the editor takes care of that part.

Thanks,

Hi Amelia. There are what\'s called book designers. They\'ll design both the interior and exterior (cover) of a book. Because these folks can be costly, you might consider hiring someone to help you do a \"mock up\" of a chapter. The programs these designers use (Adobe InDesign and Quark) cost over $1,000. Then, send a query letter (basically sales letter) with the mock up to carefully selected publishers to see if they bite. www.spannet.org has a list of resources, both small publishers and designers.

How wonderful that you wrote a book! Unfortunately, we don\'t publish books. Here is one resource I found, though: http://www.ucalgary.ca/%7Edkbrown/writings.html

If you\'d like to publish your story online (not in print) I\'d be happy to do so on this site. I could create a special area for stories like yours. Best wishes on a fabulous writing career.

Now my question - would I ever get an answer if I send a query letter over the ocean (from Germany to America)- since it is written in English.
Would any publisher answer if her had to send it back to Germany? Or is there any way to send them a mail with the query letter

Agents want to get you published. They won\'t get paid unless you have a contract with the publisher. Most publishers WILL alter your book (offer recommendations for rewrites), but if your book requires too much work they won\'t contact with you. This should be the LEAST of your fears! Go... find an agent.

Hate to say it, but you\'re probably right. You can self-publish your book on the cheap at www.lulu.com. Your best chance of getting published is to find a publisher who actively looks for books written by young adults. Unfortunately, the only such publisher I know of went out of business. It\'s just too big of a risk for them. Just keep writing. If you keep going and never look back, then you will almost certainly be published by the time you\'re in your mid-20\'s. In the mean time, enjoy the process of writing.

We are publishing these on the web as a part of the marketing effort for our web site and plan to self publish a few hundred copies for promotional purposes. ISBN/Bar code is only necessary if you want to sell the book through Amazon, book stores, or to libraries. Don\'t just send a copy of the book to publishers. Research publishers and literary agents. Send them a well-written letter with the book. Include factual data - how many books have been sold/downloaded? How many people are in your primary target market? Publishers are interested in making money. Your best bet may be small publishers, so talk to them as well.

Sid:

I\'m working on a book and I just hit the 100 page mark. I am aiming at just twice that number. I am a little confused as how to go about publishing it. I am also leary about giving out details on it as someone just might take off with it and write a fictional account of what is actually a very very true story. Even now I am a bit nervous talking about it.

I\'ve had a couple people read the first few pages now and it\'s really peaked their interest. I\'d like to go into details but don\'t want anyone to steal my work. How nice it would be to get a publisher to help me out with it money wise. It looks like a self-publishing deal but can you self-publish and hit the new york best sellers market at the same time? Or do you need a major publisher for that?

I\'d like to go into details, but someone might snatch it up as quickly as I write it out here. I guess I won\'t know until I manage to squeeze out that 2nd hundred pages or so.

Thanks for your daily reminders.

I\'ve been published once and self-published twice. Another great means of locating the \"right\" publisher is to pick up a copy of Writer\'s Market.
As Sid said, choose publishers who publish your type of book and send out at least 5 query letters.
If you are rejected, don\'t take it to heart, Richard Bach’s Jonathan Livingston Seagull was rejected 140 times and Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind 38 times.

I went on the internet some time back to look for a publishing company. The website asked for a small description of what the book is about. I did and also gave them my contact informaton. Sometime after that I received an email from someone to send my full manuscipt to an address at some apartment in New York. I didnt do my research to find out if this was legit. My question is, What can an author do to insure that the book is his before sending it out to the world
or any publishing company?
Thanks!!!

I\'m not a professional or anything like that so this is just my opinon, but I think the reason why people say you should have those close to you critique your book is because they will be more likely to try to spare your feelings so you won\'t always get an honest answer. If you know they\'ll be straightfoward with you, I don\'t think it\'ll hurt to let them look it over.

As far as an illustrator goes, I think it depends on you and your story. I\'m trying to write a novel trilogy, but since I\'m more used to writing manga and the story has several charcters I\'m finding it usful to do character sketches first, which are helping me develop thier personalities. In books illustrations help set the mood for a story, so it\'s not a bad thing to keep in mind while your writing.

Go ahead and look at some publishers and illustrators, but don\'t commit yourself to one of either until you feel you book is ready.

Again, this is my opinon as an unpublished writer, so don\'t feel obligated to follow it and feel free to blast it to pieces ^_^.

Is their a market for my life?

For several years I have been toying with the idea of writing my life story. Unfortunatly for me, It reads something like a soap opera. I can\'t seem to pin down which aspects of my life I should write about. I was an abused child, and even have some memories of when I was a very young child during the abuse. I\'ve run the gambit, so to speak, when it comes to abuse. Physical, sexual and emotional abuse spanning 14 years. Yet I don\'t want that to be the focus of my Book so much as the psychological effect and thought processes I went through.
Is there a market still, for this kind of work? Every small part of it seems connected to the other, and its hard to cut it down. As I\'ve only gotten a short way through the Book itself, I find myself wondering if I am wasting my time. Should I finish it, write out everything (even if it is too much) before sending querries to a publisher? Does the concept seem worthy enough to contact a publisher before it is completed? And as it is my life story and true, will a publisher require proof? Records or Police Reports? I have no problem suppling them, but they are an added expense. Any advice would be helpful.

Just one Question

Sid,
Your advice was very helpful but for some reason seems to attract quite a few very young authors. Well I’m 39 and dream of writing half way decent adventure novels (Like Clive Cussler). I have started a few books and completed several short stories. If you add up all the words its enough to make one good sized book-if I could just stick with one good idea at a time. The book I need to finish is a fictional story about one guy in Iraq slowly losing his friends and his mind. I’ve been their twice so a lot is based on real events but the general story line is fiction. I hope this keeps me out of trouble. My question is: what is the best (cheapest) way to copyright or protect my work before I send it out to everyone. William
Sid,

Yes... many young writers. Isn\'t it fabulous? To everyone: We DO NOT publish books. We are a resource for writers. PLEASE do not ask us to recommend publishers, find you a publisher, or publish your book!

Now, to your question. Simply go to http://www.copyright.gov

It\'s all there for you in pretty plain English. I can\'t give you legal advice without getting into trouble, but your questions will be answered within moments on the government site. Good luck!

I\'ve heard that publishing companies are more willing to negotiate contracts with Literary Agencies rather than dealing with the individual personally.

Do you need an agent? It depends on the publishing company, your publishing history, and the quality of your book. Check the publishing company\'s web site for submission guidelines. Do a Google search for Literary Agents -- lots there!

An agent can definitely help if you\'re a newbie. NEVER pay an agent up front. They get paid a percentage (usually 15%) of your advance. They don\'t get paid if you don\'t get a book deal. That\'s why they\'re picky.

Rebecca,

Good for you! When you say \"get back to me\" I\'m not sure what you mean We don\'t publish books at this web site. Also, you should complete your book, run through 3-4 edits (at a minimum), and learn how to write a killer query letter if you want any publishers to pay attention to you.

This goes for everyone: edit the heck out of your writing before submitting anything to a publisher!

Emma, that\'s good news, and it\'s normal. It means that you have a good eye for what works and what doesn\'t. Now you understand why most novels go through 6, 8, or even a dozen or more rewrites before the author feels good enough to submit the book to a publisher.

Just ask yourself what needs to happen to improve the book. You may rewrite whole chapter, remove or add characters, or even change the plot. That\'s OK. You\'re on the right track by questioning your writing.

And here\'s one more tip... very few writers (if any) ever feel that their writing is \"good enough\" or complete.

I sent in my query letter a couple days ago. What should I do if I want to \'apply\' to another publisher that I just found, and think I might have better chances with? Can I send queries to several at once--or only one? The problem is time. As I know that, for the most part, getting a reply can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months, how can I decide tht I didn\'t get approved and it\'s time to send out a new query to a new publisher? Thankyou.

Hello,
My name is E.
I have been writting since the fith grade and making up stories for as long as I can remember.
I have a great interest in getting published but I\'m not too sure how to go about and I really don\'t want to be known... Really and truely I would like very much to stay nothing more than a pen name beneath the title.
My books vary considerably in genre, but one most liked by my friends is called \"Blood on Her Wings.\"
A story of a fallen angel who is owned by a demon, and has fallen in love with a human.
If you would like more detail please let me know, or if you would like to hear about a different book(I have several if that doesn\'t sound interesting) please email me at:
stars_wish@live.com
Please and thank you-

I would really love some tips on how I can actually finish a story and not go all over writing more than one. Any tips would be awesome! All my ideas are good, but I want to actually publish one, not work on them and keep stopping.

I\'m a man who writes in my spare time, mostly things of a humorous nature. In the past few months I have written enough to put a book together. Some ideas come from watching others, sometimes the words come to me in the middle of the night - but everyone of them are light and funny. I think they could make a great book for people going on airplanes,or in a doctor\'s office, etc. They are all short reads to make you smile, and brighten up your day! However, I don\'t have a clue as to how to get a publisher to look at them. I am hoping I can get someone to look them over and tell me if they think I have a chance of someone being interested in purchasing them and compliling them into a book. I have very little money to spend. They are currently just typed on separate pieces of paper, nothing in a book of any type yet! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
