Hi there. I\'m a 21-year-old girl who\'s working on a science fiction novel. I\'ve worked on it on and off since I was sixteen. I\'m not entirely sure self-publishing is an option for me, but I definitely appreciate the information. Thanks a lot!

I\'m 17 and working on several different stories (still have not decided which to fully put time and effort into first). I also am not sure what\'s best for me but these are good things to take into serious consideration. Thanks!

Sharing Experiences

Thank you for sharing your experiences and making them available online.

I was surprised at how much I found on the internet. I learned not to get lost in it, stay focused and remember the basics.

I wasn\'t out to get rich, just do what I love and still pay the bills. Every time money became the issue it was a struggle but never sell yourself short either.

Helping people is good, for free or in yet another \"book\". I am turning this comment into one and boring readers by now. Thank you again for sharing.

Good advice

It\'s good to see that new authors are sharing their experiences. Hopefully future authors will pay attention. Publishing is not an extension of your writing--it requires a whole different thought process and activities. I\'ve been \"self\" and otherwise publishing my books for over 25 years and currently travel around presenting workshops on publishing/writing-related topics.

I tell hopeful authors that there are really only two things they must do in order to be successfully published:

1. Study the publishing industry. It is imperative that you have some understanding of this world.

2. Write a book proposal BEFORE you finish your book. (Yes, for fiction, too.) This will tell you whether or not you have a viable product and help you identify your audience and discover where they are. It will give you ideas for establishing your platform (your way of attracting readers) and you\'ll learn how to build more salability into your book.

Happy writing,

Hi,
You\'re right this book is my baby and I want to do it right. I don\'t want to make mistakes, but it\'s hard to do it all right when you are new to the profession. I want this book to be so clear to those that read it that when it is a movie it will touch the hearts of all. So what should I do to get the ball rolling. I haven\'t had it edited and most companies want you to pay them in order that they publish the book before they have read it. Can you give me some tips for self publishing as a new comer thanks!SPrice6@cinci.rr.com or (513)779-0286

Traditional Publishers???

I\'ve been published once and self-published twice, but before you make the choice to self-publish, pick up a copy of Writer\'s Market and send out at least 5 query letters to traditional publishing houses.
Like Mike said, it could save you a small fortune if your manuscript gets accepted.

For those who are looking for a place to start here is my story. I published with Xlibris and I found them very helpful and professional. I have heard horror stories from others but personally I found these folks very easy to work with as they guided me through the publishing maze. The entire process from start to finish was completed for under $1,000. The drawback is that the finshed product can be expensive. Xlibris charges around $22.00 for a book that is anywhere from 107 - 200 pages. I purposely edited my book to 104 pages so that it would be available to the public for $15.99. It later dawned on me that Xlibris does not try to hold exclusive rights to publish your book so that once the copy is put in PDF format you can find a publisher that will print for less. The best advice I have is just to just write and edit, then edit some more and have someone else read and edit before you submit your work. Once you get through to the publishing stage you will have a grasp on the publishing process and feel much more confident when you begin your next book which I am doing right now.
