I always suggest that book writers first learn how to write a short story because a short story is the equivalent of a chapter in a book. It is so much easier to learn to apply writing rules to a short story than to work on a whole book.> For a free writing evaluation:

Your question is not very specific. Marketing a book requires a lot of study. If that is your intent, take a course or read up on the subject. You can also self-publish. However, I suggest you find someone who has done it and get a reference for a good press. Don\'t trust all the advertisers. Do a lot of comparison shopping.> For free writing tips, sign up for The Writer\'s Choice Newsletter at:

You can self-publish, of course, but be careful who you choose. Try to find someone who can recommend a good press and compare prices.> If you try to sell your book, you may have to supply the graphics.
It is usually advisable to hire someone to represent you, when selling a book. It is possible to take a marketing course and then market your own book, but it isn\'t easy. Learning marketing takes a long time. If you study marketing, get this - http://www.novelandshortstory.com/.

I recently submited my book idea to american publishing have you heard about them because they loved my idea however I am very anxious and I do not want to jump into something that I am not to sure about. I felt my personal life and family experiances would be a great book because when I have conversations with people that I met or people that I have known for years they say man you should write a book. What do you think.

Hi Tricia

I hope someone else answers your question, too, because I am not familiar with American Publishing. Suffice it to say, you should not have to lay out a penny. You should sell using North American Rights or First Rights (which retains rights to the material after the book is published). This means that after the book is published, or perhaps even before, you can sell lots of magazine articles (based on things in the book), to promote the work. This is a common practice.

I\'m sorry I didn\'t answer your original question, but I hope this is some help.

The best way to write a book is to write the first three chapters, find a publisher (by submitting the three chapters with a cover letter), and see if they want to buy it.

A writer can seldom see their own talent for what it truly is - either good or bad. If you want to know how good your work is, send a couple of chapters to some published writers and ask their opinions.

I give free evaluations, too. See http://www.creativewritinginstitute.com for guidelines. Good luck!

Making a book

I am a new immigrant to Canada. Since I arrived here, or even before, I started to send emails to my friends and family telling all my experiences here, telling what\'s new or different from what my life used to be in South America.
Most of my friends and family said that I should put all my stories together and make a book. Most of them even said that they like the way I write and describe my life here. I thought about it and I kind of like the idea, but I don\'t know where to start.
Should I just start writing in a .doc format, then print it out and send it to a publisher??? I have no idea of the process of \"making a book\".
And also, do North American publishers publish in Spanish? or should I try with some other Latin American publisher. My book is in Spanish.
Thanks!!! :)

Hi Valeria
I advise you to learn how to write short stories before you try a book. The reason why is because you can learn all the formatting, conflicts, settings, writing rules, etc., on a short story and can then apply that learning to writing a book. After all, a chapter in a book is about the same as a short story.> Yes, you would write it in .doc format, and I would think your chances might be better if you submitted it to Latin America. > For more good writing tips, sign up for The Writer\'s Choice Newsletter at

Hi Glenn

Even experienced authors who have written dozens of books can\'t be sure their books will sell. I imagine you are wondering if you should invest all that hard work into writing a book when you can\'t be sure you\'ll sell it.
1. If you\'re a writer, you will write
2. Learn to write short stories first
Good luck!

:) I recently wrote a young adult book and it took me four months. it\'s 325 pages long, and i just turned fourteen. i wrote the whole thing when i was 13, so i have great, young talent. my best friend just finished reading it yesterday, and is in LOVE with it! i\'m now working on the sequel. i have my grandma and mom & dad trying to help me, but so far nothing is happening. it would kill me not to share my work with other readers. my book will interest any one who likes the Twilight Saga, or any other youg adult books.

Hi Angie

If you can\'t write a good, publishable 2,000 word story (or longer), you aren\'t ready to try writing a book. However, the answer to your question of how you can sell a book is to seek an agent who will sell it for you (which is extremely difficult)or to pay a \"vanity press\" to print it for you. For more information, search \"how to sell a book\" on Google. I hope this helps.

If you have written a book by the age of nine, you are a remarkable child. As you grow older, I\'m sure your writing will mature with you. In the meantime, anyone can publish their own book at what is called a \"vanity press\". Of course, you would have to pay to get it published. It might be a lot cheaper if you went to Kinko\'s and ask them to run off a few copies. I would try that first. Good luck!

Hi Tamara

First of all, let me congratulate you on many months of work. I\'m sure that was hard.

Your book is actually a novelette. If you haven\'t been published before, it probably needs to be professionally edited. Your best bet is to publish it yourself, as it is very difficult to sell a novelette if you are an unpublished author.

You may want to go to a Kinko store and ask them to run off just a few copies for you and your friends/family. They have various options that are affordable. For more writing tips, see:
