The Top Ten Rules for Writers
Written by Anne Wayman

You want to write a book? Or, maybe you want to write a short story, poem, play, or screenplay. Whether you're writing fiction or non-fiction, there are certain things you need to do if you want to be successful. Here's my top ten list for successful writing.

  1. Write often, all the time, everyday! Write in secret, in public, take notes at family reunions and at the theatre. Become the weirdo who is known for always having a pen, a pad and a roving eye.
  2. Show, don’t tell, use concrete and specific details and all five senses
  3. Plot should be secondary to strong characters, but still be present.
  4. Read broadly, read deeply, read in a variety of genres, read consciously, READ
  5. Keep writing, especially, when desperation, depression and doubt are your three best friends. Push on!
  6. Read your work aloud to find mistakes and places where sentences and dialogue don’t flow.
  7. While you are in the midst of writing a novel, ignore number 4. Reading other people’s prose and stories can dilute your own voice.
  8. Know your subject. Readers will not trust (i.e. read) authors who write a story about racecars, but don’t know the difference between a V8 and a V6 engine.
  9. No two scenes should create the same tone or have the same purpose. If you have a sentence that conveys an idea such as, “She was a good writer”, cut out any sentence with the same subject. “She could create a page of beautiful prose whenever she wanted.”
  10. Make your readers ask big questions. Does money make happiness? And small questions. “Is she going to get kicked out of her apartment?”

Hi.

I am considering authoring a book. I am looking for the required structure
of paragraphs, etc. I understand spacing, for example, is very important. Where
can I find this sort of information?

Thanks.

I think you're asking about fundamental rules and guidelines
on writing. Your best bet is a writing class. Or, go to the
library and get one or two books about writing. There is no
"required" structure for paragraphs. Some paragraphs can be one
sentence. Others can take up whole pages. It all depends on
your writing style and your genre.

This article really opened my eyes to what I needed to do to get back to
writing. It gave me structure to follow daily as a writing. Especially number 7,
which advised not to read other books or prose while trying to write because it
interferes with my voice. Thank you Ms. Wayman!!!

As far as I know there is no age limit for bow young you are ewhen writing a
novel. However, if ally ou want is for someone to read it, give it (via email,
printed copy, etc) to a trusted friend or family member. They can give you
suggestions and advice.
And please tell me you're just saving time by not
spelling things correctly, using inproper grammar, etc, and that you don't do
that in your book. If you do, I'm sorry but you need to fix that or it won't
stand a chance.
