Your ether PR guru has arrived via the Internet in the form of the mustachioed Rick Frishman. Self-described as being able to teach entrepreneurs to “get more visibility for themselves and their businesses by leveraging the magic of publicity.’ Frishman is speaking or giving a class just about every 15 seconds it seems—he even talks to you when you go to his web site! The respected Frishman is hawking his wares at just about every major writing and publishing event this year and next. Co-authoring Guerilla Marketing for Writers: 100 Weapons for Selling Your Work and the Author 101 series, as well as providing a downloadable online guide for DIY´ers--the man has obviously figured out how to clone himself. Frishman knows what he´s talking about—his bio lists him working with Simon and Schuster, Random House, Harper Collins, Pocket Books, Penguin Putnam, and Hyperion Books. That is one impressive list. In case that didn´t perk up your author ears, here´s some of the writers he´s worked with: Stephen King, Caroline Kennedy, Howard Stern, President Jimmy Carter, Mark Victor Hansen, Hugh Downs, and Henry Kissinger.

So you´ll probably want to check out his ideas for your PR campaign.

  • If you´re going to hire a PR person, “don´t pay someone a retainer to just TRY—know what you are getting.  Do your homework and learn as much of it as you can yourself.’
  • Know the difference between PR and marketing. “Marketing is doing outside the box: events, selling, etc. Publicity is getting buzz--getting written up in newspapers (reviews), getting on TV, radio and other print.’
  • Frishman advises writers, whether published by a big house or self published to hone in on core elements such as, “knowing your audience, getting media-trained, and to never stop trying.’ If it´s your first book, “get people who have been doing this for years to help you—do not reinvent the wheel.’
  • Print on Demand is seeing a notable impact on the printing industry. Frishman sites that “There are 195,000 books published a year, most sell under 500 copies. It is changing every day and POD is getting to be a big part of it. But beware when it comes to choosing a POD. “Most are lousy,’ warns Frishman.  {quotes}“You have to make your book look and feel professional. Get an editor, have someone do your cover design etc.—or it just looks stupid."{/quotes}

    * Frishman is most interested in working with “non-fiction, how to, money, sex, and relationship books."
