Marika Flatt, the genius behind Book PR and marketing company PR by the Book (http://www.prbythebook.com), agreed this month to provide free PR consulting to the winner of the Write and Publish Your Book Summer Writing Contest.

Rumors around the office are that there are more people writing books today than reading. Judging by the proliferation of iPod’s and print on demand publishers, we’d have to agree.

“It’s a tough and sometimes brutal publishing world,” says Sid Smith, owner of Business WordSmiths and creator of the Write and Publish Your Book web site. “We created our new web site to provide (mostly) unbiased information and resources for authors of practically any genre. We wanted to take some of the mystery out of publishing for writers.”

To help promote the new web site and give authors a fighting chance, Smith created a Summer Writing Contest that’s open to all genres (“except poetry,” Smith adds). “The best part is that we’re absolutely thrilled to have Marika as part of our team,” he says. “By providing quality PR advice to the contest winner, we’ll give him or her a huge head start over any other self-published author.”

With so many books published today, it really comes down to how well your book is marketed. While some excellent books remain boxed in mortgaged-to-the-hilt garages, those who put time and energy into marketing will survive, maybe even thrive. Flatt’s company helps aspiring authors get their books seen – and read. She’ll help you get on radio and TV, and even help you figure out what to say when the cameras start rolling.

“I’m saddened,” she says, “by the poor authors who finally get their 30 seconds on the radio and don’t have a clue what to say.” Smith adds that, “marketing is such an important part of publishing that we jumped right out of our chairs when Marika agreed to provide some of her time to the contest winner. We love her commitment to quality and her sincere concern for and interest in her clients. It’s exactly the way we like to operate, so she’s a perfect match.”
