Tip for finding a literary agent -- Rita Emmett

There are many ways to find an agent. Join a writers' group and ask members for recommendations. Go to the library or a bookstore and look at books similar to what you are writing. Check the "Acknowledgements" section. If the author thanks her agent, you've learned three things. The agent handles your category of book, the agent is probably good to work with (since the author shows appreciation), and the agent is hard-working (because the book got published). Then you can look up that agent online, or through the Association of Author's Representatives.

(Editors' note: Mike Larsen shared lots of practical ideas in his SNN teleseminar "Getting the Agent You Want and Selling Your Book Fast for Top Dollar. You can order the CD or MP3.)
