An Interview with Caelan MacTavish Huntress

What type of freelance writing do you do?

Everything from video game strategy guides, book proposals

How did you get started in the freelance business

I wrote for a long time for fun and then I decided I should make money using my skills. I found jobs online.  There is a website called justmarkets.com that lists freelance jobs. It costs  $10 per month and it’s really incredible.

What kind of educational or professional background did you have?

I am finishing my B.A. right now. I worked at the university newspaper and I used those clips, to get work at other newspapers. Some of the big papers you can query them and they will accept interesting articles that are well written

What is the toughest thing about your job?

That my salary changes each week.

Can you describe your writing process?

Everyone has to find the way that works the best for them. I do all my networking and query writing in the morning then I take a couple of hours break. Then in the afternoon I do the real meat. I work 6 to10 hours per day, that way.

Besides your work do you do other types of writing?

It is really important to journal and to keep the writing muscle flexed. If I just do writing for work, my writing will suffer and get stale.  I try to spend a little time each day doing some creative writing.

Do you have any advice for people who want to break into freelance writing?

Start as a hobby and keep it on the side until you make enough money to quit your day job.
