How to Write a Book Series - How NOT to Write a Novel

200 classic mistakes and how to avoid them - A misstep-by-misstep guide

A couple of years ago we ran a novel writing contest. We only received 23 entries, but that was plenty.

A few were decent. Three had potential. The rest were, and I'll be nice, not quite up to snuff. Honestly, half of the entries were horrible. We couldn't imagine how these folks could have thought their books were complete.

Typos... misspellings... poorly constructed sentences. Lack of editing was just one small part of the problem. The books were dull. The characters were predictable or flat. The story line in some cases seemed to be missing in action. Oh, it was a grueling process for us...

So when I was asked to review the new book by Howard Mittlemark and Sandra Newman, How NOT To Write a Novel, I jumped on the chance.

Learning from the mistakes of others is always valuable. Reading well-written novels should be a top priority for any aspiring author, but sometimes it's nice to know if you're making any of the classic mistakes. That's why I like this book.

First, I'll assume that you read voraciously if you're a writer. If you're not, I recommend that you read a half dozen good novels before reading this book.

Now, assuming you read consistently in the genre in which you intend to write, you'll have some sense of what works. This book shows you what doesn't work - and why. The book is divided into seven parts.

  1. Plot
  2. Character
  3. Style - the basics
  4. Style - perspective and voice
  5. The world of the bad novel
  6. Special effects and novelty acts - Do not try this at home
  7. How not to sell a novel

How to Write a Book by BAD Example

What I like about their book is how Mittlemark and Newman provide specific examples of bad writing to illustrate their points. Some are quite humorous. Others are downright painful to read.

For example, in section 1 on Plot, they provide an example where the plot is too slight:

"Fools," Thomas Abrams thought, shaking his head as he completed his inspection of the drainage assembly under the worried eyes of Len Stewart. "Foolish, foolish, fools," he muttered. Squirming out from under the catchment basin, he stood up and brushed off the grit that clunk to his gray overalls. Then he picked up his clipboard and made a few notes on the form, while Len waited anxiously for the verdict. Thomas didn't mind making him wait.
"Well," he said, as he finished and put the pen away. "Well, well, well."
"What is it?" Len asked, unable to keep a tremor out of his voice.
"When will you people learn that you can't use a B-142 joint-enclosure with a 1811-D-nipple cinch?"
   "B-but--" Len stammered.
"Or maybe, let me take a wild guess here, just maybe you confused an 1811-D with an 1811-E?" He paused to let it sink in before delivering the death blow. "... Again."
He left Len speechless and walked away without a look back, chuckling ruefully as he managed the look on Len's face when he fully realized the implications of his mistake.

"Death blow?" Oh, my... that's really bad. Sucks you right in, doesn't it?

The authors go on to provide examples on plot lines that are delayed too long, the character's childhood is recounted to no purpose, and in which the leader is intentionally misled. And that's just a quarter of what's in the first section.

how to write a novelFortunately, they don't leave you hanging after one of their examples. They'll tell you why the passage doesn't work and what you can do to improve it.

The section on endings is particularly good, as that's one place many authors struggle. "How do I end this, or get rid of this character?" They give the example of one inconvenient character offed himself for no good reason. "For a moment hope flared in him -- was there a way out? No! It had all gone too far. Damn that merger! As he pulled the trigger he hoped there would be a way to atone for all his sins in the other world."

In the chapter on getting to know your hero, they provide a nice list of reasons why your readers won't necessarily like your hero. They won't like him just because he meditates or goes to Burning Man. They won't care that his maid is like a best friend or that he has green eyes. While these descriptions may round out your character, they won't make him emotionally appealing to your reader.

I could go on, but I won't. Buy the book for yourself.

Here's what we recommend...

My suggestion: Don't just read the book. Take one example every day for the next year and rewrite it. Can you do better?

As a marketing copywriter, I watch for bad copy to rewrite as often as I look for good copy to emulate. I learn and grow from both. Great novel writers do the same, especially when just beginning. Ten or more drafts of a first novel is not uncommon. Successful authors often throw out complete sections of their first draft, eliminate characters, and completely change the ending. Don't be afraid to learn from what doesn't work.

But also don't be afraid to make mistakes. You'll look back on your first attempts at writing and say, "eeeyuuuu... that's BAD!" So what? Do it anyway.

One more thing: read the final chapter of their book a couple of times. They provide one of the best and most concise explanations of how to sell a book that I've seen. They provide several examples of query letters and explain the process that you'll go through to find a publisher for your book.

Enjoy

Kartikey - looking at your three near-identical posts, I think that if you're
planning to write your book in English, then you need to master the language
first - simple things like spelling, punctuation and so on. Then when you've
dome that you can move on to more complex things like plot and narrative. Think
of it as being like a sport - you have to master the basic techniques first
before you can become a professional.

I've attempted to write several books, but have been stopped by the idea of how
I'm going to get it published. When i begin writing I'm consumed with the
characters and plot. I dont want to stop, but the fear or having the novel go
nowhere puts the plug in the ideas flowing through my mind. I believe this book
will help to overcome this and perhaps will lead me to publishing my first book.

Hi,

I have read your comment and would like to offer some encouragment to
you. I have never written or published a book, but it is clear to me that you
should not worry about wheather or not the book gets published. Let yourself get
ingrossed with the plot and the characters and create your vision of what the
book should be. If you let your fears of never being published stop you then you
NEVER WILL publish the book because it will be incomplete. Complete the book and
the rest will follow
mamawolf7  - writers block broken   |70.104.100.xxx |2009-10-02 10:36:38
Write because you enjoy it, because you have ideas that bursting to get out. So
what if it never gets published. When your 80 are you going to look back and go
gee I am glad I didn't waste my time putting my ideas on paper. Or are you going
to go I am glad I did it. Most people spend alot of time regretting what they
DIDN'T do in life and little time wishing they didn't bother. Think about it.

where to go from there that I've been having issures with.

If anyone would

It helps to have an unbiased oppinion, as you probably no, friends and family
just don't offer an unbiased oppinion. But to find a good canadate to read your
novel and actually provide honest feedback, you might want to find someone who
is interested in the subject you are writing about. Otherwise, there opinion
will be lacking in comment as well.

write in English, but do you know about America? I would love to read your book
when done. I enjoy anothers point of view on this country. Don't let people
stop you from writing. Unless you do alot of fixing on the English grammer, you
might have some draw backs. You take the good with the bad. Good Luck

You can get a book published no matter your age. You might need someone "of
legal age" to sign agreements on your behalf. If you have a good book then
you should try. What's the worst that could happen? They could say "No".
That's it. I say you should go for it! Follow your dreams!

just filling up 200 pages isn't enough. I have read so many new authors writing
Vamp/ware stories that it is scary how really bad they are. If you want to
publish, you have to be ready to have someone pick apart your story and then you
have to re write. I have re written by book twice and now it is in the editing
stage. I wear thick armor to hear reviews, but they help make my story
better.
Do you have a goal for your main character? and a motivation? some
conflict? and a resolution? good start, now do you have that in each chapter?
No? go and rewrite!!

This is because you don't read fantasy. What makes your story is Plot. what
you have is the plot now in 15 pages. Go back and say, what are my characters
thinking in this situation? How do they react to each situation.
BIG things to
think about 1) what is the goal of your main character? what are the goals of
your sub characters?
2) list what motivates your character to get to the goal?
the same with your sub characters?
3) what conflicts are stopping them from
reaching that goal?
4) What did they do to overcome the conflict to get to the
goal.
Think about the Wiz of oz. Dorthy wanted to get home, The OZ told her she
had to get the red slippers, the witch and munchkins and monkeys and poppies,
were all conflicts to keep her from that goal. Then the Wiz told her what to do
and she did it and Voila' she woke up at home. Each of the other characters
helped in their own way to achieve their goals and help Dorothy. Use thi...

Interesting... good article, by the way.

I'm thirteen and I've been writing
for a couple of years now with my good friend. We post some fiction on this
website:

fanfiction.net/glenniecrombie

It's based off of a fandom,
though.

It's just practice, but we can easily change the names and tweak the
plot just a bit.

The thing is we have been thinking about cowriting an actual
original novel, but how would we be able to get someone to look over it? Most
people don't give the time of day to young aspiring writers. I've read some
books written by certain adult writers for young teens and could not help but
wonder what it would be like to actually have something published.

Any
advise?

That's sort of funny--my friend and I are co-authors of a book which may become
a series...We based the fantasy book we're working on off our school and our
class, and we send it out a chapter at a time to our friends and those
classmates. Yes, it's true that adults are the ones who will decide whether your
book is up to snuff. But they're not your audience, I'm guessing. So write the
book. Have people your age read it. Ask for their honest advice--my friend and I
have had extremely good feedback. The feedback might not say we did a good job,
but it tells us what our audience wants to read, to see in their mind's eye. And
if you can write for the age it's meant for, and the people of that age love it,
the publisher you find will love you. (We can dream about a nice, good-hearted
world, but let's be truthful. They'll like the money that the work of art you
create with pen and paper will bring in. But what does it matter why they...

Your friends don't want to hurt your feelings. Have and adult editor, edit it
and really tell you what is wrong. Make sure you have your armor on cuz its
gonna hurt. I found that when I listened to my editor friend who really told me
what was wrong AND how to fix it, I did what she said without changing the story
and now it will be published this Nov. Find an editor you can trust and Listen,

I know
its tough in the begining everything is but this book might just be the key

The world sure is a difficult place and only 1 in 900 people actually
stick with what they are aiming for...

My story is going great! Its like nothing you've ever heard before. I'm on
chapter 13 and I would like to know how I could publish my book after I'm done?
r2d2y   |71.114.20.xxx |2008-10-21 01:43:20
wow, no one get too excited...how many of you have actually done research on the
possibilities of your novel getting published? I mean, seriously! nothing about
your class or a fanfic is going to get published 4real. I've written both, 4
fun, but u'll have to upstage it 500% for it to even be considered. I'm 15 and i
want to get published too, but really, i'm not expecting anyone to jump at my
novel, no matter how long i work on and edit it.

i'm not sayin give up ur
dream. What i am sayin is that u should practice and practice untill you
honestly beleive that someone who's already read a million manuscripts that
morning and isn't really ready to give you half a chance will like your novel
enough to submit it to the next level, and on up.

That, and i suggest a TON
more personal research.

You are smart. Don't think just because a few friends think you have a good
story that you have mastered the craft. I just read a friend's daughter's book
she had self published. It was cute but not that good. lots of stuff missing and
it had no drive to it, nothing that made you want to turn the page or read the
next chapter. Make sure you end each chapter with something that makes the
reader want to go on.

and....

yeah i'm sorry if i sounded harsh. But i just don't want anyone to
be like, OMG i have an amazing book and be totallty put down.

A book i
totally suggest anyone interested in publishing should read is Getting YOur Book
Published for Dummies. If nothing else, it'll wake you up to the harsh realities
of the publishing world.
