Chapter 1: The Flicker in the Forest

Chapter 1: The Flicker in the Forest Twilight bled through the canopies of Elowen, casting dappled gold across the forest floor. Kael, a sixteen-year-old apprentice blacksmith, trudged along the moss-covered path, his satchel heavy with ore samples. He often came here for solitude after the clangor of the forge—alone among the whispering leaves and the soft chatter of birds. But today, something was wrong.

A chill snaked down his spine, unrelated to the crisp air. The wind had stilled, and the woods held their breath. That was when he saw the light.

A flicker—not flame, but something older, something... alive—danced between the roots of an ancient oak. Kael stepped closer, heart hammering. Cradled in the shadow of the roots lay a creature no bigger than a rabbit, its body formed of glowing embers and soot. It shivered violently, fading with each breath.

Kael knelt beside it, captivated. "What are you?" he whispered.

The creature’s eyes opened, and Kael gasped. They were not eyes, but twin coals, burning with knowledge, pain, and something deeper—hope.

“You are the last,” it rasped in a language that felt older than words, yet Kael understood. “The Ember Crown must rise... or all burns.”

Its body pulsed once, flared brightly, then dimmed into stillness. Left behind was a crystalline heart, still warm, pulsing faintly in Kael’s hand.

He stumbled back, clutching the gem, trembling. The wind stirred again, and the forest exhaled. But Kael knew nothing would be the same. Prophecy? Ember Crown? What did it mean?

As he turned to leave, he felt a strange weight settle on his shoulders. The weight of fate, heavy and unwelcome.
