Waking up from her impromptu nap, Ataraxia found herself in front of a blinding white gun range with three aisles.
"Welcome to the tutorial." A female with waist-length brown hair and hazel eyes wearing a suit said. "I will be your assistant throughout your time in Kill Zone."
Another panel appeared in front of Ataraxia. On one side, a company of trained soldiers in blue uniforms stood at attention, looking at the group opposite with a gre of disdain. On the opposite side, a group of people stood, looking like bandits, returning the gre of disdain with a look of pity. In the middle, a clipboard floated above a group of people who seemed to look at the other two groups indifferently.
"The Refulgence is a glorious empire, full of trained soldiers. Joining them means that you are in an organised army. While you may lose some freedom, you would also be properly cared for. The Eventide are a massive group of freedom fighters. Joining them means you are part of a rebel army. This gives you lots of freedom, but you aren't cared for like you would be in the Refulgence. The Contractors are a neutral faction, part of neither side. You may get paid for fighting for the Eventide on one day, and the Refulgence on the next. As a contractor, you must " The assistant said.
'You got a pack of cards?' Ataraxia wondered, hoping the woman could read her mind like the AI from before. 'And a notepad and pen?'
"Yes." The assistant said, "But not everyone can read your mind. I recommend asking the developers for a notepad and a pen that won't run out."
#Ok.#
'Clubs I join the Refulgence, diamonds I join the Eventide, hearts I join the Contractors and spades I draw again.' Ataraxia thought as she shuffled the pack. Ataraxia held the deck of cards in front of the assistant.
#Please draw a card for me.#
"Sure" The assistant as her lips curled into a beautiful smile. Running her hand on the back of the cards, she eventually stopped at a card near the bottom of the deck. Pulling it out of Ataraxia's hands, she flipped the card so they could see the chosen card.
'The Contractors it is, not that I care about which side I fight for. I mean, the difference in treatment can't be that much.'
Clicking the Contractors, she patiently awaited the next step.
"I must say, your method of choosing is quite eborate. Either way, please pin this badge somewhere visible before choosing your starting primary. Your stats will be adjusted so you can use it. You may test them by shooting down the range." As she pointed at the weapon rack on the wall behind Ataraxia, the assistant expined, "The right aisle is for shooting on the ground, the next one is for shooting underwater and the st one is for shooting in space."
Grabbing the floating silver badge, Ataraxia pinned it onto the pel of her trench coat before heading towards the weapon rack. Surveying her options, a system prompt showed up.
{Would you like to view the Assualt Rifles, Submachine Guns, Shotguns, Sniper Rifles, Light Machine Gun or Launchers?}
Unlike what happened with the VR helmet, Ataraxia was able to click a button to prompt the menu to continue.
'How nice of you to let mute people py the game via interactable buttons, but not let them enter the game?' Ataraxia thought with hidden anger before choosing to browse the sniper rifle section.
{The sniper rifles in this game consist of the AWM, the FN Ballista, the SVD, the M110 and the Barret M82.}
Clicking the AWM so she could try it out, a rifle with a green body appeared in her outstretched arms.
Heading over to the aisle that simuted shooting on a pnet like Earth, Ataraxia's hands ached as she lugged it over. 'Holy shit. This thing is slightly heavier than a Ballista.'
Aiming at a target, she fired.
'Shooting that felt weird for some reason.' Ataraxia thought.
{The AWM is a sniper rifle. The shooter can shoot a total of 25 shots on the ground, 20 shots when fired underwater and 10 shots in space before drawback occurs and the user starts to take damage. Neutralises targets instantly if hit in the head or upper body. Ineffective against any armoured vehicles. Requirements: 7 Strength, 3 Precision.}
Heading back to the rack, she picked up her favourite rifle.
'The Ballista.' Ataraxia thought as she brought it over to the first aisle.
Firing shots down the range, Ataraxia had 100% accuracy.
{The FN Ballista, a sniper rifle. The shooter can fire 25 shots on the ground, 20 shots when fired underwater and 10 shots in space before drawback occurs and the user starts to take damage. Neutralises targets instantly if hit in the head. Fatal if untreated when shot in the upper body. Ineffective against any armoured vehicles. Requirements: 5 Strength, 3 Precision}
Moving over to the underwater section, she aimed and fired.
*BANG*
She missed.
I guess shooting underwater is different. God that hurt my shoulder though.' Ataraxia thought.
"That would be the result of a different type of bullet. This bullet is loaded with more gunpowder than usual and coated in a special material called phlora, enabling the bullet to travel underwater as if it was shot on nd." The assistant expined. "The same goes for bullets that are space-grade. Nano rockets are used to propel the bullet, which would also result in higher recoil for the user. To prevent the user from flying off into space thanks to the recoil, hundreds of small adjusters are implemented into the suits, which also allows movement."
Heading over to the st aisle, she aimed down her scope and prepared herself for the recoil.
Aiming at a target, she fired.
*BANG*
*CRASH*
As she fired, the recoil of the rocket-propelled bullet fired Ataraxia right into the wall.
'Fuck.' Ataraxia thought. 'I am never firing space-grade weapons without something with those adjuster things on. If that was from the Ballista, what would it be like for the Barret M82.'
Visibly shuddering from the thought, she quickly decided not to test it.
Looking up at the range, she saw that the bullet missed the target and hit the wall instead.
'I don't think I'm choosing the others.' Ataraxia thought as she pressed the {Accept} button.
"Please choose your sidearm." The assistant said.
Walking back over to the rack again, she looked at the options.
{Would you like to browse the pistols, machine pistols or revolvers?}
Choosing the pistol section she watched the rack sink into the wall, before emerging with five pistols on it.
{The pistol section consists of the Glock 19, M1911, PIT VIPER, Desert Eagle and the USP.}
Choosing the PIT VIPER, a pistol she had always been interested in, she walked to the firing range.
*BANG*
*TING*
Unlike with the ballista, her accuracy with the pistol was not 100%. Rather, of 20 shots, she only managed to nd 1.
'Guess I need to start shooting with the pistol in the real world as well.' Ataraxia thought as she moved over to the underwater aisle.
Firing, she felt slight pain in her hands.
'Not as bad as shooting the Ballista, which is to be expected.' Ataraxia thought as she prepared herself to be flung into the wall again.
"Haaaah." Ataraxia sighed as she braced herself and prepared to fire.
Aiming at the target closest to her, she fired.
*BANG*
*CRASH*
Just like before, Ataraxia missed the target and was flung into the wall again, at the exact spot she was thrown into 10 minutes ago when she was firing the Ballista.
Wincing from the pain, Ataraxia dusted herself off before pressing {Accept}.
#So what's your name anyway?#
"I am nameless." The assistant said.
'Nameless huh?' Ataraxia thought.
#Would you like a name?#
"I don't mind. If you wish to give me one, feel free to do so." The assistant said.
'A name...' Ataraxia thought.
#How about Mumei.#
"Japanese for Nameless? How straightforward of you." The assistant said. "Well. I'm Mumei from now on then. Nice to meet you, Ataraxia."
