Chapter 83 - The Devourer Awakens

  The Devourer stepped forward—

towering, skeletal, its body a shell of cracked stone and pulsing darkness.

Five corrupted elemental cores glowed faintly in its chest,

each one flickering like a dying star.

The ground withered beneath its feet.

  The trees bent away.

Even the revenants backed off from it—

their twisted bodies trembling in recognition and fear.

Alya clutched Cael's hand, breath catching.

  "What... is that thing...?"

Rian's voice shook like he was barely holding himself together.

  "...An extinction.

  Walking."

  Aster swallowed hard.

  "I'd heard legends—

of the creature that destroyed the last Convergence pair.

  But I never believed—"

  The Devourer raised its head,

slowly, like it hadn't moved in centuries.

Its voice was ruined stone grinding against bone:

  "Convergence...

  child of the five...

  and the lost anchor..."

  Alya's chest constricted.

  "Lost...?"

The Devourer's eyes dimmed, then flared.

  "ONCE BEFORE...

  TWO HEARTS JOINED.

  AND I ATE THEM BOTH."

  Alya staggered.

  Cael pulled her close.

Ren shrieked from behind a rock:

"NO. NO THANK YOU. DECLINE. REJECT. WE ARE NOT SERVING THAT BUFFET—"

Eris slammed a hand over her mouth.

  The First Targeted Attack

  The Devourer's head turned—

  slow, deliberate, inevitable—

until its gaze fixed directly on Alya.

  Her breath hitched.

Cael slid fully in front of her.

  "Don't. Touch. Her."

  The Devourer ignored him.

  It raised a hand—

a long, cracked limb of stone and shadow—

  and pointed at Ayla's chest.

Black lightning formed at its fingertips.

  Rian shouted:

  "AYLA GET DOWN—"

  But she wasn't the target.

  Cael was.

  Alya saw it too late.

This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

  "CAEL—!"

  The Devourer fired.

A streak of black-lightning resonance tore across the clearing—

  fast, silent, fatal.

  Cael shoved Ayla aside—

but she grabbed him and yanked him with her.

The attack hit the soil where they'd stood—

  CRACK—

The ground split open for twenty meters.

  Ren screamed.

  Lami cried.

  Aster cursed under his breath.

  Eris pulled Mila behind her.

Cael held Ayla tightly as dust filled the air.

  "Are you hurt?" he breathed.

  She shook her head violently.

  "No—are YOU—"

  "Not yet."

  Alya stared at the crater.

  He should have died.

  The Devourer paused—

  as if considering the outcome—

  then it spoke again:

  "...the anchor must die first."

  Alya froze.

Cael's heartbeat stuttered through the Link.

  Alya felt it—

  painful, sharp, terrified.

  Her vision blurred with rage.

  "You want Cael...

  to break me," she whispered.

  The Devourer's head tilted.

"THE CONVERGENCE CANNOT SURVIVE WITHOUT ITS HEART."

Alya's fury snapped like a whip.

She stepped in front of Cael.

  "No one touches him."

Her magic flared around her palm—

  but it sputtered, unstable.

  Cael grabbed her hand.

  "Ayla—wait—

  use me."

  Alya's breath shook.

  "If I pull too hard—

  you could collapse—"

  "I trust you."

He lifted her hand to his chest.

  "And you trust me."

  Her heart cracked open.

  "I do," she whispered.

  Rian's Breaking Realization

  Rian moved closer—

  not in jealousy,

  not in rage—

but with something spiraling inside him like a star collapsing.

  He whispered:

"...It was never about who was stronger.

It was about who she needed."

  His voice shook.

  "And it was never me."

  His fingers curled painfully.

"But I can still help her."

  Alya looked at him—

  really looked.

  "Rian..."

  He didn't meet her eyes.

  "I'll fight with you.

Even if I'm not the one you chose."

  Alya's chest tightened.

  Cael was stunned—

  but nodded.

  "Thank you," he said quietly.

  Rian glanced away.

  "Don't thank me yet."

  Ren Unlocks Her "Ability"... Again

Another wave of revenants surged in from the left.

  Ren screamed:

"WHY DO THEY KEEP AIMING AT ME—GO BOTHER SOMEONE ELSE—"

But when one leaped toward her—

Ren put up both hands on instinct.

A blast of light exploded outward—

  twice as strong as before.

The revenant flew backward like it had been hit by a hammer.

  Ren stared at her palms.

  "I AM A SHIELD.

  A GODDESS OF PANIC.

A FORCE OF PURE CHAOS AND FEAR—"

  Eris groaned.

"The universe gave powers to the wrong person."

  Aster corrected:

  "No.

Ren was chosen because she reacts emotionally.

  Her instincts are fast.

  Her shields form without thought.

  She's the perfect guardian...

  for the Convergence."

  Ren froze.

  "...wait...

  WHAT?! I'M A BODYGUARD NOW?!

  ME?!

THE ONE WHO FAILED GYM CLASS?!"

  Alya smiled weakly.

  "You're exactly what we need."

  Ren burst into tears.

  "I—I AM?!"

  Cael whispered to Eris,

"Please don't let her get a cape."

  Mila Sees the Truth

  Mila staggered forward suddenly—

  grabbing Ayla's sleeve.

  Her eyes glowed silver.

  "A-Ayla...

  the revenants...

  they're not just monsters..."

  Alya steadied her.

  "Mila—what did you see?"

  The girl trembled violently.

  "They're drawn to your power.

  But that big one—

  the Devourer—"

She looked at the creature in horror.

"It's here to eat your roots.

  Both of yours."

  Alya felt her blood freeze.

  Cael's grip tightened.

  The Devourer stepped forward.

  "THE CONVERGENCE SHALL FEED ME."

  The Seal's Final Warning

  The Seal's form flickered—

  like even it was strained.

  "AYLA.

  CAEL.

  LISTEN."

  They turned.

The Seal's voice dropped to a heavy, resonant tone.

"THIS ENEMY CANNOT BE DEFEATED BY FORCE."

  Alya's heart clenched.

  "Then how—?"

"YOU MUST UNITE YOUR POWER COMPLETELY.

  NOT AT HALF STRENGTH.

  NOT THROUGH FEAR."

  The Seal paused.

  "BUT THROUGH CHOICE."

  Cael inhaled sharply.

Alya felt his heartbeat pick up.

  A choice.

The same choice she made in the Heart Link.

The same choice he made to stay beside her.

  Alya whispered:

  "Cael..."

  He turned, breath trembling.

  "Alya."

  The Seal commanded:

  "JOIN YOUR ROOTS.

  FORM THE TRUE CONVERGENCE."

  Alya reached for Cael's hand.

  Cael grabbed her wrist—

  not pulling away—

  but pulling her closer.

  Their foreheads touched.

Their Link pulsed like a heartbeat.

  Alya whispered:

  "Are you ready?"

  Cael whispered back:

"I was born ready for you."

  And their power ignited.
