“Ocean Craft, Art 1, Depth Command.”
Blood surged through the veins across my body, and I instantly started feeling better. I tried to sit up, but a nurse placed a soft, gentle hand on my bruised chest. “Not so fast sir, it’s going to take much longer for your injuries to fully heal.”
“What…is…this…”
“This is Ocean Craft, sir. I am increasing the circulation and efficiency of your blood to expedite your body’s healing processes. It will take a while for you to make a full recovery and you’ll probably be very hungry in the meantime…”
“This is amazing…Thank you.”
Milliard rushed over. “James! Are you alright?”
I smiled. “That was the worst beating I’ve ever taken. But I’ll be alright.”
I lied. My entire body was throbbing. This was the worst pain I had ever felt. I only said that because I did not want this pretty nurse to think I was a wuss. Mr. G shook his head as he gathered the other students, and they resumed their matches.
“I apologize. Mr. G tried to call the match early, but I wanted to give you an opportunity to come back and show what you were made of.” He shook his head. “You had a solid strategy. I never imagined it would devolve into what you just witnessed. I apologize again for making you endure another episode of my family’s drama. I hope you can forgive me.”
“It’s fine. I’m the king of family drama. I’ll tell you about some of my far superior stories another time.” I gave him a thumbs up. “After I get stronger of course.”
He smiled. “Yes, you will get stronger. Much stronger. But it was reckless and irresponsible for me to have pitted you against my brother, especially given the way he’s been acting lately...For that as well, I hope you can forgive me.”
“Aww it’s fine. I’ll get him back eventually. I promise you that.” My knees wobbled as I rose to my feet. “I think I’ve got another match in me and everything!”
I hope this fa?ade is making this nurse fall in love with me because I’m not sure how much longer I can hold back these tears.
“I am glad your spirits have not been dampened. By the time you rest up and eat, there will probably be time for one more match. I will let you decide who you would like to face this time.”
“Sounds good! I already have someone in mind!”

I was unbelievably mad that I lost to that prick. I was only able to keep my emotions in check because now I had a new goal, to beat his ass (and because I didn’t want this cute nurse to see my tears!) I swear I’ll get my revenge before I leave this place.
I sat and observed the rest of the matches while I attempted to make conversation with the nurse…but she wasn’t interested. She unfortunately saw through my embellished attempts at showing off my combat knowledge and grew tired of not understanding my anime references when I saw certain moves. Once I recovered, I went over to the one person I hadn’t seen fight yet today. He was sitting in a ball, curled up in a dark corner with his hands around his knees.
“What’s good Marcus! That first match was pretty embarrassing. But I haven’t seen you fight anyone today. Would you like to…”
“No. Go away. Now. Die.”
My aggravation was rising, but I took a deep breath. “What’s wrong? Don’t you want to get stronger like everyone else?” I smirked. “Oh, I get it you must be afraid you’ll lose to the newcomer on his first day! Understandable, I am just that cold so…”
“Go away right now…Before I kill you.” Malice radiated from his skin and a growing sinister presence was expanding around him.
It quickly vanished as Mr. G approached. “Get your sorry ass up and fight the newcomer! Do we have to do this every single day?! You haven’t done a damn thing except sit here and pout about your extra conditioning. Set a damn alarm if you’re tired of being punished for showing up late!”
Marcus rose and started a slow walk to the nearest ring.
Mr. G shook his head. “I’m sorry about him, and I appreciate you trying to keep him included. There’s no saving that one I’m afraid.”
I smiled as I jogged over to the ring. “I’ll get through to him. I promise.”
“Uhhhhh…you’re gonna fight him?” Jaren asked.
“Yes sir! I told you I was going to get through to him! He’s going to be my friend no matter what!”
“Yeahhhhhhhhh… good luck with that” He panickedly ran toward the building.
Weird.
As I entered the ring, the other students headed inside, but a few came over to watch the last match of the morning. I heard their murmurings. “He chose Marcus?!”. “Dumbass.”. “I hate that demon child!”. “It’s over.”. “Let the commoners kill each other for all I care.”
Milliard whistled conspicuously and wouldn’t meet my eye. “Wow…you picked…Marcus…what an…interesting choice…”
“What’s wrong? I thought you would be proud of me for choosing my fellow squad mate?”
“I am proud, but this is not exactly the event that you’d want to select him in…” He sprinted inside. “GOOD LUCK! I’LL SEE YOU IN HEAVEN!”
Marcus reached the other end of the ring and stared into the dirt.
Dark storm clouds hovered over the area.
I looked up. What the hell is going on? I might need to get out of here before…
“This will be a standard match. Competitors will fight until their opponent concedes or suffers a significant injury. Competitors are also subject to disqualification if any part of their body exits the circle. All disqualifications are subject to the umpire's decision. No dirty fighting will be allowed. This is the first match between Marcus Sky and the newcomer James Fos. Marcus Sky has 665,999 wins and ten losses to his name. Ready! Begin!”
What the hell? He’s that good?
His aura of malice enveloped the area as his body shone with a milky glow. He lifted his gaze from the turf, and I briefly caught a glimpse of a piercing green eye. I raised my guard and he instantly vanished.
POW!
My brain rattled within my skull as he blasted me in the face. I tried to locate him, but before I could react, he was behind me.
CRASH!
He grabbed my right arm from behind, pulled my arm over my shoulder, and slammed me into the ground.
The pain was overwhelming, and I blacked out.
