Chapter 98

Before the floor dropped, Conrad already positioned himself as far from Hisoka as possible without making it obvious.

In just a few seconds, the entire floor beneath the applicants vanished.

Metal panels retracted downward with mechanical precision.

For a brief instant, 305 bodies hung in empty air.

  Then they fell.

  Five meters.

  No one screamed.

It would be pretty funny for them to scream from just falling down from five meters.

If any one of them could not handle dropping from five meters what they are looking to get in the Hunter Exam.

"Yeah, I expected nobody would have any problem." Conrad thought.

In the end, if anybody wanted to take the Hunter Exam they would do their research and would have some capability in terms of intelligence and research capability.

If not they would not be able to pass the screening process that let them in The Exam Site at the first pce.

Most nded with bent knees, rolling or absorbing impact with ease.

The thuds echoed across the second ptform below, but there were no serious injuries.

They were not ordinary civilians that would have the problem of falling from a height of five meters.

  They were Hunter Exam applicants.

Even if they were not, humans in the Hunter x Hunter world are pretty strong and powerful in the first pce.

  Click.

The second floor retracted just as suddenly.

  This time

  Seven meters.

Several applicants lost their footing mid-fall, colliding with others.

  The nding was rougher.

A loud crack echoed somewhere on the left.

  A man screamed.

  "Fuck!!"

Two applicants rolled too te and nded awkwardly, one clutching his arm and another groaning as he tried to stand on what was clearly a fractured ankle.

“What kind of exam is this?!” someone shouted.

  “These people are insane!”

  Murmurs spread through the chamber.

Conrad, however, as it is to be expected, nded smoothly without even needing to activate his Nen.

His body absorbed the impact naturally.

After surviving the initial airship drop when he first arrived in this world, a seven-meter fall was nothing.

  He exhaled lightly.

  “Something will change,” he thought.

  This pattern was too simple.

Pure gravity tests would eliminate weak applicants quickly.

Without NEN reinforcement, most trained individuals could handle up to ten to fifteen meters with proper nding technique and above-average physical capability.

Of course, above average are the Hunter x Hunter humans, not the humans from Earth.

It would be supernatural if any human on Earth fell down fifteen meters without injury or death to a hard floor.

Or it would be pure luck.

  Five seconds passed.

Some applicants moved closer to the walls, perhaps hoping structural edges would offer leverage or something stable to grab.

Which would prove not great in an instant.

  "Click."

  The third floor vanished instantly.

  This time

  Thirteen meters.

The chamber erupted into chaotic motion.

  Bodies dropped through the air.

  The impacts were brutal.

  One applicant hit headfirst.

  The sound was sickening.

Another nded ft on his back, air exploding from his lungs.

  A scream cut short.

More than ten had fallen incorrectly and struck their heads or shoulders at lethal angles.

Nearly thirty showed visible broken bones, arms bent wrong, legs twisted unnaturally.

Those already injured from previous drops were in far worse condition.

  Some attempted to stand.

  Conrad stood upright.

He had not any men again yet.

  He did not need to.

  But his awareness sharpened.

  The pattern was escating.

"The first was a five-meter drop."

  "Seven meters after that."

  "Thirteen now."

  “Almost fifty eliminated already."

And the real exam had barely begun.

Lono’s voice echoed from above through unseen speakers.

  “Interesting,” he said lightly.

The mechanism beneath them hummed again.

  Conrad shifted his weight slightly.

“This won’t just be increasing height,” he thought.

“If it were that simple, the ceiling would be much higher.”
