Chapter 9: And who are you?…

Her hair flowed like a bright gold, done up in a messy bun. She was also wearing a tight but flexible white dress, with the skirt that stopped right at her upper thigh. This made her figure noticeable, and it was highly attractive. She also had on gold bracelets and necklaces, maybe a few thin rings as well. She also fashioned with her white sparkling heels, although she was carrying them due to the sand. Her beauty and youth was almost incriminating. She pushed her hair back, and titled her head down in a flirtatious manner, giving a cute smile while still looking at him, “What happened to your friend?” she asked, with a softness Daniel couldn’t remember the last time he heard since, all of this. He looked back to where the mysterious stranger should have been. But he disappeared… Vanished… Daniel scanned around for any trace of him, all that was given were two footprints in the sand, and waves crashing in the distance. “I. I don't know, heh.” He turns back to meet her smile, chuckling. “Say, is that really gold?” He asked her, “Oh this? No, this is just cheap stuff for my outfit.” she said, matching his chuckle. She asks jokingly, “Say, are those really your teeth?” Daniel lets out a laugh, “Yes, they are!” She gasps, putting her hand over her mouth, “Wait really?!” Playfully going along, sensing a possible tone of sarcasm, “Oh yeah, and this is my real skin too!” She replies smiling, “And I have gullible written on my forehead!” They both shared a laugh, before looking at one another. Daniel ask’s, “Hey, I uhh. Didn't get your name?” “Mary.” She said, “My name is Mary. It’s nice to meet, you..?” He quickly responds stuttering, “O-Oh- yeah right, silly me, I’m Daniel!” She smiles softly, adjusting her hair again, “Well. It's nice to meet you Daniel." Standing to the side, two figures watch from a distance invisibly present. On one side is our previously disappearing friend, with the ribbons coming out from each ear, dressed in vestments. Now we can see their face, but they did not look like a man nor a woman. The one next to him… Equally strange…

A blood stained golden sarcophagus floating midair, wrapped in and bound to the earth by chains. With a pair of wings restricted on its back, and two hands poking out in front. If that wasn’t enough, it also had a synthetic static face stitched onto its real one peering out at the head of the coffin. It was also equal in size, some 9 feet tall. As they both stood next to each other, the angel said to the masquerader, with great indignation. “So. The deceiver has come to deceive…” The Demon responded in a decrepit manner, with a voice like gravel, pausing for heavy breathing, while its real face was moved underneath its lie. “I.. am simply.. Insuring… That, Daniel.. Return to me… For he is my. Son, simply, by his nature…” The angel grips his staff iron in fury by the words, “Idiots, run their mouths. Daniel, Is the son of the most High. Keep silent. Watch the tongue you naught have, lest you, Lose? Your broken teeth?…” The sarcophagus rattle slightly, “hehehehe… A-a-ahhhh, yesss… The Nazarine, Was it?.. You-” Out of nowhere the abomination began to rattle and shake again, seemingly choking or gurgling on something caught in its throat. Then it spat out a horrendous smelling chunky black tar from its mouth, that dripped down its expressionly mask. The angel added, “You are unbearable.” The Demon continued, its speech slowly clearing up while it pushed more gunk out of its mouth, “You, *Cough* need not- *Cough*. Remind me of Him… For I acquire my sons, to show Him that there. Are. Others like me… Hehehehehahaha” It was upon hearing these words the angel did grip his staff wroth with fury, looking over emboldened by vigor of righteousness, slamming down his staff with a great thunder, “SPEAK. NO MORE!” And instantly they vanished and a tremendous lighting shattered the black sky, and as the thunderous roar boomed across the sea to the shore, Daniel and Mary looked on. “Yo huh, we should probably get going. I think it's going to rain soon.” He said, “Yeah, I think you're right!” Another thunder broke the sky and bellowed as the two of them scurried off towards the house, giggling with each other. But the angel was still there, looking on, worried. “Daniel. I wish I could have said more, but it is not my place.. Please Daniel, O’ Daniel, stay vigilant. O’ Daniel.. Do not break my heart. Do not be ensnared…” The angel was on the verge of tears, he raised his staff one last time, and upon dropping, lightning flashed the sky in twain, and he was gone…

By the time they arrived at the house, the weather went from being a light spitting droplets, to a serious downpour. The party was practically done at that point, although they didn’t see it coming up, red and blue lights were flashing in the gravel pit outside. The party got busted, someone brought in cocaine, there was underaged drinking, and the whole house was raided. “How are you getting home?!” Mary asked, having to yell a little because of the volume of the rain. “Oh yeah right, uh..” Noticing that she’s starting to get soaked, Daniel takes off his hat and places it over her, to which she promptly holds it over her head, “Thanks, you didn’t have too!” Daniel tried to rub off the smile on his face, she just had a way of speaking that felt so nurturing and kind. He didn’t even mind getting wet, “Right, about that, anyways..” He looks around as fewer and fewer people scattered to their cars and drive off, “I think-” He looks to where Hunter parked his car, “My ride left me…” Mary laughed, punching his side lightly, “No need to get all mopey ya big oaf! You got me don’t you?! Don’t worry I’ll drive you home! Plus, I think we're going to get incarcerated or something if we stay here any longer..”

Daniel stutters at her offer, as he sees a pair of police men looking over at them, one radioing in on his walkie, “Agh, I-I Just don’t want. Damn, agh- to be a bother! that’s all.” Mary scoffs walking away, playfully waving his hat, “Well I’m going anyways, come if you like!” Daniel gives in, “Ugh, ok-ok! You win!” He follows her, the two of them through the rain to her car, “But just a fair warning, I live pretty far away!” She fires back, “Oh come on, Can’t be that far!” As the both of them laugh and giggle, getting into her gray Honda Civic accord, joking about whatever’s happening with the hoard of cops behind them. Another car pulls in… A black sedan with blacked out windows. And on the side of its door it bore an insignia, a globe with the inscription, Climate Protection Agency… The car parks and two men step out into the rain, buzz cut, wearing shades and earpieces, suits and all. One of them fixates, his gaze hardens like a machine, his mind steel and his heart cold, on the now leaving vehicle as it departs from the crime scene. As lightning flashed forth the sky again, the pair turned and walked, to exercise their authority upon the investigation and its members…

Before they drove away, The unusually placed car and man caught Daniel’s eye, and the pair standing in the down pour; as they passed them, although it was nearly impossible due to the rain, one of the men was staring at him, yes him, the passenger side of the car, and for seemly no good reason… Moving past that, as they were a two way road, surrounded by little more than grass and sand, the windshield wiper swept back and forth as crackles of lighting glowed dimly over the open ocean. The sense of vast emptiness, isolation as it were; but that wasn’t important; however, Daniel couldn’t shake this sense of unease, the man staring at him. He was in a fixated mile long stare, trying to make sense of what he saw or why it was bothering him. Mary on the other hand seemed like the most oblivious person ever, tapping her wheel and swaying her head back and forth with glee. So Daniel naturally asked her, “Did you see them?” She stops her fidgeting, “See who?” Daniel responds, “The two men, the car. The weird symbol. Like why the hell were the ‘Climate Protection’ services there. Seems a little off don’t you think?” “Oh yeah, those guys. The ones in the cruiser?” “No, the black car.” “Ahhhh, right-right-right, those guys!.. Now I think of it, that was kinda weird. What do you think?” Daniel took a second to pause and think… “I.. I don’t know…” Mary gave a heavy sigh, “Hughh, I can’t tell if you’re mister mysterious or mister indecisive. Anyways, you can’t live that far can you?”

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

The front door opens to her house as the two of them stand outside. Mary chuckled for the last time, a little defeated, “Welp, guess you do live that far. Hehe.” The two walked in, Daniel taking off his hat and placing it on his chest, “Thank you, you really didn’t have too.” She undid her bun to ring out her hair, “Please, it’s nothing really. My girlfriend’s ditch me when the house got raided, your guys left you, we’re two peas in the same pod!” Daniel sighed in relief, “Ah.. hehe, yes of course.. Well thank you. Truly.” He also took off his jacket, and carefully removed his silver cross by using a handkerchief. Mary speaks as she walks to the foot of the stairs, “The couch is over there, feel free to put your wet clothes on the hanger, and uhh.. yeah.. see you in the morning I guess.” Daniel, dropping the clothes next to him, smiling,“I guess so.” She smiled back and walked up the stairs… Daniel finally after everything laid to rest, groaning before closing his eyes with sweet relief. He thinks to himself, “Hmm, morning. I can’t believe I’m going to wake up to that in the morning! Oh yeah that’s awesome.. wait a minute, what day is it today? Ah damn ima miss church if it’s Saturday! Wait I should ask her!- No she went to bed already.. and I should know what day it is damn it!… Ok ok, relax it’s fine. I’m just going to go to sleep, and we’ll just-” Daniel goes to yawn and stretch, brandishing his fangs, “figure it out, in the morning...” The only thing is… How could he possibly hope to fall asleep without his coffin? Has the activities of humans made him forget that he is a vampire?! This realization also hit him too, that all he was in for tonight, was his eyes resting in the darkness, inside a hot girl’s house while being soaking wet…

The morning came as it did, the sun rose up and the moon to sleep, and nature with the sun. Daniel awoke also, not from sleep of course, but from his eight cylinder rev fest of running up the wall thoughts; paired with periods of just teetering off the edge of passing out from exhaustion. He frowned and sat up, at the very least he was dry, he then began to blink and remove that swamp colored crusted gunk from the corner of his eyes. He didn’t really speak outside of mumbling, his hair was a mess, and he didn’t know what time it was, only that it was morning. He wasn’t paying much attention to his surroundings until he realized a shower had been going on this whole time. “Oh yeah, I’m in her house.” He said to himself. As that thought came the shower valve creaked and the water stopped. “Man, where the hell is my phone at?” A small set of coughs wheeze out from his waterless throat, as he pats around his body, then his trench coat. His voice was still rather dry and withered, “Oh dude, don’t tell me I left it at the party.. or maybe it’s at my house?” He growled and leaned back into the cushion, until he began to hear footsteps coming down. Immediately he rose and snapped to attention, although foggy, he did not forget that he was a guest here.

As she walked down the stairs she called to him, “Good morning sleepy hea- oh good, you're up! How did you sleep?” Mary was wearing a towel covering, and drying her hair with a separate cloth, staying at the bottom of the stairs. Daniel answered, “Not the best but, agh what can you do? It’s a couch after all. And I was soaked.” She looked over with some disapproval, thinking to herself, “Rude.. But-” then added, “Fair, it is just a coach anyways.. By the way, I have to leave for work soon so you’ve got to get on out of here. I’d drive you if I had the time but, you’ll have to bus, ok? I’m really sorry..” Daniel grabbed his coat, hat and cross, “No worries please, I’m so thankful you let me stay here! Truly! I was just about to get going anyways..” He puts on his trench coat, as Mary says, “Ok, I wanted to give you something then, I’ll be right back!” Before running up the stairs. Then Daniel puts on his hat, along with being seared by making direct contact with his silver cross. “Remember what you are..” He said to himself, as he quickly put it around his neck, holding his hands. “You are a monster, and she is beautiful, undeserving of your filth and misfortune.” He began to walk to the door, “No one needs that shit you bring everywhere you go in their life, it’s done, it probably wouldn’t have worked out anyways.” He reaches the door and begins to open it, “Plus, she already dropped you by that comment you made about the coach.” She blurted out to him, “Daniel!!” He turned around, “What is it?- …” She stood there, holding out a piece of paper as an offering. “Here. I want you to have this..” Furthermore as Daniel looked down, he held back tears. It was her phone number. She added calmly, and gently, “Call me please. I had a really good time with you last night, and I’d love to get to know you more...” Such sweet and tender words were now foreign to his mind, he just gripped his shirt, as to where his heart would be saying, his voice breaking, “B-But I’m hideous!” She scoffed, “Dude, who cares if that’s your real skin. I’ve literally grown up in an algosaxon family, do you know how pale they can get? And who cares about your teeth or eyes.. I think they make you interesting.”

Daniel was shocked beyond words, thinking that his heart may cave in from this overwhelming sensation of, joy? Is it? He didn’t know anymore, perhaps higher than a kite. But he quickly brought himself back down, smiling, “Thank you so much..” Taking the paper and looking at her, with soft eyes and not a worry in the world. She really did have to go though, “Uhhh ok silly, I think you should, get going now.” Daniel now really comes back to reality, “Oh shoot right, sorry my bad- yeah. Yeah- ima get going. I’ll uh, see you soon, yes?” He backs up to be outside the threshold of the door and into some shade of the roof. She responds gladly, “I hope so! Hehehe, take care though!” The both of them exchanged their goodbyes, and Mary closed the door. And for once Daniel was happy, all he could do was smile and close his eyes. “Finally something good has happened.” Is all he can think about as he blushed looking down at the paper. He turned around to head home, stepping into the sunlight and looking up, has he so quickly forgotten?

He couldn’t even think before he was immediately set into the most brutal and all consuming fire hades could ever bring. A spontaneous harrowing, violent and unforgiving. All he could see was red, and all he could do was scream.. He screamed such an horrific bloody scream of pain, as the fire began to quickly char and pop his flesh. But he would act quicker, this isn’t the first time he’s been caught of guard like this. He began to pick a wall in the shade, and slam his body listlessly against it. The more he did this, the more the fire went out, and the less he would scream. He knew it was finished when smoke came off his skin and not flame. As his flesh sizzled and bubbled, he said thinking to himself, “And.. here she comes-” Mary comes bursting through the door, “Oh my goodness Daniel are you ok!? I heard screaming!!” She was only half way up the stairs when the blood curtailing cry was let out, so she still had her towel on. Daniel’s objective was absolute, he could not let Mary see him, or his face. His fair appearance has fled from him, for his face looked like the nightmare of elm street, and felt like he took a full body faceplant into a flatiron grill. So he was leaning on the wall and facing away from her. “Yo what smells like that? Is something, burning?” She asked sniffing the air. “Yeah!- Rghh, yeah, I think.. Agh, someone is having a barbecue! Or something..” Daniel replied, trying to ignore his writhing pain. Mary sniffed again, “Are you sure? It’s usually supposed to smell good.. Hey are you ok?” Daniel let out a loud groan before answering, “Rgh, yeah I’m- I-I’m fine.. haggh..” he had to think of something fast, “It’s my barber! Ah yes, my barber! AGH- I just, love him so much and, I just heard that he’s going out of business!.. Agh.” Mary was confused as how to answer, “Uhm, ok? Well um, don’t stress about it to much-” Daniel interrupts her, catching a charred piece of flesh that slid off his skin, leaving a fresh red mark, “And his utterances! Ah yes! Such a wise and thoughtful, grammatical man, Truly!- Rghh.. Don’t worry, I’m leaving right now. Thank you for your concern though!” Merry confusingly closes the door, “Well uh, ok bye then, call me if you need anything?” As the door shut Daniel stood up, releasing the cloud of smoke from his jacket that he was trying so desperately to hold in. He threw his charred flesh to the ground, and said to himself, as his face began to heal, “Never. Forget what you are…”
