Chapter 5 - The Military Selection Test

The Lost Vampire System Chapter 5 - The Military Selection Test

She looked back at her tablet and scrolled a little then stopped.

“Looks like we have two people who were classified as a power level of one, right before they came here,” Stacy said this as she was checking the information that was passed on from their previous schools. “Henry, step forward please.”

Henry did so but he looked like a wreck. He was very wobbly and looked like he was about to throw up. Jareth, who now looked like he could do forty pushups compared to Henry.

“Would you please tell me your Evolved power or powers,” Stacy requested.

Henry gulped nervously but gave his reply. “I don’t have an Evolved power.”

The others now understood why Henry was so nervous. He was worried that by having no Evolved power he would get bullied immensely. The war caused many problems and made children into orphans like Jareth and his sister Mia. Henry was not orphaned but his family was too poor to be able to buy an Evolved book, even the cheapest one.

“Do not worry,” Stacy said smiling.

She and the two guards each reached into the bins behind them and pulled out a book from their corresponding bin. The books glowed slightly.

“Three evolved books detected,” the system said. “Light amount of Nephilim energy detected on the books.”

There’s that Nephilim energy again, Jareth thought. Maybe the Draven System isn’t so crazy after all.

“Which Evolved book do you want Henry?” Stacy asked. “The water Evolved power,” she said this while pointing to the guard on her right. The book was blue with a wave on the front. “The wind Evolved power,” this time she pointed to the guard on her left. This book was grey with three lines in the middle for the wind symbol. “Or the plant Evolved power?” She rested her hand on top of the book in her hand. This book was green, and it looked like it was made of plants with a leaf in the middle.

“W…w…wait,” Henry stuttered. “Are you giving one of these to me for free?” He asked finally.

Stacy nodded her head in response.

“I’ll give you a moment to decide,” she said.

Henry stood there thinking. His hands were shaking from excitement and nervousness. He then turned his head to look at us.

“Pick the plant ability,” Damion said suddenly. “The ability is very useful. The other two are good as well but if your body is not strong and can only get you to a power of 2, then the plant will be more useful.”

Henry blinked twice then turned around to give a response. “The plant Evolved book please.”

Stacy gave the book to her right guard. He walked up giving the book to Henry and walked back standing next to Stacy. The two guards placed their books back in their corresponding bins. She began tapping away. Henry stared at the book like it was an ancient artifact from thousands of years ago.

“Please learn the ability,” Stacy said. “As of right now you will not be taking the test, and you will be issued on your Forwatch of having Zero Abilities and a total power of one. Once you learn the ability, the watch will detect this and your Forwatch will automatically update.”

Henry’s Forwatch vibrated, and the screen displayed the words ‘Evolved Powers’ on the top left Corner. It displayed the number 0 and below, it said No Evolved Ability. There was a line that divided through the center and on the right, it displayed the words ‘Each Evolved Power Level’ and below, it said No Evolved power. It showed ‘Total Power’ underneath both sides that showed the number 1.

Henry gave a nervous smile and returned to stand next to Jareth.

After the war, just like how the factions formed, a military faction formed as well. There was a human that had learned an Evolved power during the war. He was a three-star General from the United States military, the highest living ranking member that was still alive. His name was George McCalister. While the other factions were forming, he was able to organize the rest of the world’s military under the Military Faction or just known as the Military. During that time the Military Faction was able to collect all the Evolved books for plant, wind, and water.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Before Jareth had arrived, he had done some massive research on the military. He knew that the military gave everyone arriving at the academy without an Evolved power a choice among the plant, wind, and water Evolved abilities. The military did this so that the ones who were gifted one of these Evolved books would feel like they should repay the military by serving. Since they had control over all the books of the three powers this meant that the only way that you could increase your power was by showing your loyalty to the military, and they would give you higher level Evolved books. If you were loyal long enough, they would give you a second Evolved book in the hope that you could learn a second Evolved power.

Before Jareth had gotten the Draven System, he had decided before coming to the Military school that doing this would’ve been the best option. Now, the only problem was that Jareth now has an Evolved power…or at least he thought he did. He wasn’t sure if the “Draven System” can learn this ability. Even if he took the book and couldn’t learn from it, he was sure the military would probably keep tabs on him and expect him to use whichever ability he chose.

This is the situation that Henry is in now. He must be loyal to the military if he wishes to get stronger. His reaction also showed that he probably didn’t know of the situation that he is now in. For now, Henry looked satisfied with the plant Evolved book he was holding tightly.

  “Jareth Nightshade,” she said.

Jareth sluggishly stepped forward. Stacy looked at him and wondered what was wrong with him. Maybe he is sick, Stacy thought. I will just continue with the process.

“What is your Evolved power?” Stacy asked Jareth.

I don’t know why she is asking me, Jareth thought. She should have the information that the school probably sent to them. Maybe they will see if I will slip up. I’ll just say no and see what happens.

“I don’t have an Evolved power,” Jareth responded.

“Do not worry,” Stacy said giving Jareth a warm smile. “Just like I did for Henry, you can choose which Evolved book that you want.”

All three turned back to their bins and pulled out the same Evolved books as they did before. The three presented it to Jareth.

“I’ll give you a moment to decide,” said Stacy. “You could also choose the plant so you and Henry can learn the Evolved power together.”

Henry smiled at this comment. He wouldn’t mind if he had someone, he could learn the ability with. The three walked forward so that Jareth had a closer look compared to what Henry got. When the three got within a certain range the Draven System reacted.

“Three power level 1 Evolved books detected. Error: unable to learn the power within. Would you like to convert the power from the book into 10 Exp each? If you do this, you will level up to level 2. Requirement: need to touch books. Nephilim energy detected. Identifying the energy. Please stand by.”

This surprised Jareth a little. The first option was unfortunate, but the second option was even better. Unfortunately for Jareth, he didn’t know what would happen to the books if he chose this option. There would be questions if he did something that doesn’t make sense. The system once more said Nephilim energy. He would have to look up the properties of Nephilims when he got to the library at military bases.

“I don’t want any of the Evolved books,” Jareth said.

The mouths of the students along with Stacy and the guards fell open. For the students they were wondering why he would turn down this offer. Stacy looked at her two guards, but they just shrugged.

“I’ll be a moment,” she said as she backed away, taking out her phone to call her superior.

Once she was far enough away, she made the call.

“What is it?” A man with a deep voice had answered the phone.

“A student by the name Jareth Nightshade has refused to take one of the Evolved books.” Stacy said with concern.

“Did he not get what you were trying to give him?” The man asked.

  “He did,” Stacy replied.

“We need to make sure that people keep joining the Military Faction.” The man said. “We represent the last of the old world. Go with the protocol. Try to force him if you can.”

“Yes, sir,” Stacy said. “But I’d also like to inform you that the student with the last name Youngblood, the one you told me to avoid, is in this group,” she added worriedly.

  “Yeah, so? The man scoffed.

Stacy took a deep breath and continued to what she was going to say. “It seems that Damion Youngblood is starting to be friends with Jareth.”

There was silence on the other end of the phone. The man who was currently in his office had sat up straight. Sweat had formed on his face. A few moments later he began.

“Do not force Jareth to choose an Evolved book,” the man said with a quiver in his voice. “A Youngblood is not to be messed with. The Youngblood having few scuffles with students is ok, but if big names get involved then that is not good. Even though he is 16 years old, he is still a Youngblood.

“I don’t get it,” Stacy said. “Why is a Youngblood so important?”

“It is best that you don’t know,” the man said. “Still make him take the test like everything is normal.”

The man hung up the phone. He sat back on his chair, and the nervousness was visible on his short, bearded face. Luckily for us that this happened in your group Stacy, and that I am your supervisor, or this could have gone sideways. The man sighed pouring himself a drink. He took a gulp then swallowed.

As far as I know, I am one of the few that knows about the Youngblood family. If Stacy had forced him and the result had angered the Youngblood, then there was a small chance that a war could’ve started that we most likely aren’t going to win. My spies have informed me that the family has gotten weaker over the years, but we still shouldn’t take the chance. They informed me that Damion is not a big member of his family.

The man sat forward once again now thinking about the student Jareth. He pulled up his file that displayed two names. Jareth Nightshade and his sister Mia Nightshade.

“Your sister had accepted the water Evolved book,” the man muttered to himself. “But you did not accept an Evolved book yourself.” He tapped his chin for a moment. “Even if a Youngblood had taken a liking to you, I wonder how long you will survive in this cruel world.”

The man smiled as the entirety of his eyes went completely black. The power of a...demon.
