I slapped some Wise Glasses on Glados’s face and gave the AI Pokemon a Magnet to experiment with. It was kinda funny seeing the magnet sticking to the side of Glados’s head as a weird accessory. Sahara got a Muscle Band and a Soft Sand. I wanted to try to replace her Garchompite with a Dragon Fang, but she wouldn’t let me touch it, so I just left it.
Winnie got a Spell Tag and a Bright Powder to play around with. The other higher ranking members of the ghost gang got their own items too. Each of them got a Spell Tag, and in Mismagius’s case, she got two. Despite the witch ghost pointing out how excessive it was, Banette added three Quick Claws to one hand and three Razor Claws to her other hand, her Wolverine claws reminded me of Mega Banette. Then Haunter draped a Reaper Cloth around himself cause he thought it was cool.
Kaiju got Dragon Fangs, one for each head so they wouldn’t bicker over it. Rotom got in on the action and snapped a bunch of pictures of Kaiju looking awesome, but I had to remove the collars because his heads kept gnawing at them. So the Dragon Fangs were switched out for a pair of Wise Glasses and Dark Glasses. Until the chewing issue was solved.
Not wanting Thorondor to feel left out, I gave him a Soothe Bell. There wasn’t any string I could use to turn it into a necklace, so I just used a Focus Sash. I kinda wanted to add one of the Power set items to help with the eaglet’s flight training, but I reserved that for later. I’d probably first use it on one of the ghosts to test how they worked here compared to the game, not to mention that the items were too big for Thorondor. I might have to wait until he evolved to equip it.
The eaglet was ecstatic to get his own items and began flying around and chirping like it was Christmas and he’d gotten everything on his wishlist.
Winnie was already testing out how the boost from the Spell Tag also boosted the scale of the illusions he could create, though he didn’t seem too sure on how to make use of the Bright Powder.
Banette, Mismagius, and Haunter were also showing off their items to the other members of the ghost gang.
Sahara was already testing the increase in power that the Muscle Band and Soft Sand gave her, and she was relishing it. I had to warn her not to mess up the trail, she’d have a chance to use the items later, albeit only one at a time.
I was about to suggest a short battle between Sahara and Glados when the AI Pokemon swivelled its head around, pointing its beak northwest
“WARNING. MULTIPLE. LARGE. POKEMON. DIRECTLY. APPROACHING.”
I looked towards where Glados was pointing. There were quite a few massive ice boulders that peppered the area, and the sparkling snow and ice made it hard to make out what the Pokemon was.
I shielded my eyes from the light and asked, “What is it? It doesn’t look Mamoswine shaped.”
It took a moment for Glados to respond, “SCANS. INDICATE. TWO. BAXCALIBUR.”
Winnie padded over to me, having heard Glados’s announcement, “A Baxcalibur?”
“TWO. BAXCALIBUR.” Glados corrected.
“Yeah, an ice-dragon type that’s also a pseudo-legendary species.” I said as I pulled out my trail guide. I don’t remember there being any Baxcalibur populations in this area. “Is it with a trainer?”
“NEGATIVE.”
“Don’t they live near the top of the mountain?” Banette asked as she, Mismagius, and Haunter floated over, “Why is there one here?”
“Heck if I know. Maybe it’s hunting? I’d imagine there’s more prey here than at the mountain top.” I suggested as I waved Sahara over, “Either way, it looks like a good way to properly test out these items, right Sahara?”
“Gar!” The landshark growled, stomping and creating a small crater under her feet. Kaiju joined us and shouted, “Zwei!” As he shot a double Dragon Pulse into the air, barely missing Thorondor and Glados, I put a hand on his head, “Woah there buddy, be careful where you shoot.”
“RUFF! LET!” Thorondor loudly chirped indignantly.
“Zweiiii!” Kaiju shouted back in an apologetic tone.
A loud, alligator-like bellowing echoed, followed by the sounds of boulders being shoved aside and multiple heavy footsteps crunching on snow.
Sahara growled in response and stepped in front of us, her teeth bared in excitement.
“Wait until we know what they want Sahara. If it’s looking for a fight, start with Stone Edge, and then Dragon Rush into Iron Head.” I instructed. The landshark twitched her tail in response.
A Baxcalibur marched out from behind a large boulder about a hundred feet away. The sunlight glittered off its scales, creating a slight blinding effect similar to how sunlight sparkled off of snow. Its height and bulk certainly made it an intimidating sight, as would any fully evolved pseudo-legendary.
The ice dragon’s yellow eyes evaluated our group before settling on Sahara. The Baxcalibur bellowed again before leaning forward onto all fours, opening its mouth wide, and shaking its dorsal fin with the enthusiastic flare of a peacock shaking its tail feathers. There was another bellowing noise as another Baxcalibur arrived and began doing the same display.
Sahara’s battle glare was immediately replaced with a disappointed look. She rolled her eyes and turned away with an irritated huff.
“Wut?” It took a moment for my brain to switch out of battle mode.
Banette floated over and pointed to a section of my guide with one of her clawed fingers, “It says here that it’s mating season for Baxcalibur. These ones have more vibrant red scales around their claws, so they must be males.”
Meanwhile, the two drakes shuffled into the middle of the road to stay in Sahara’s view. One Baxcalibur shuffled around and did a spin before bellowing again. The other drake let out a grunt-squeaking sound, then it lined up to be parallel to the first Baxcalibur and began body slamming it. The other ice dragon retaliated with a body slam and a powerful snap at its opponent’s dorsal fin.
They both began making what I could only describe as angry toad squealing noises at each other.
I had to cover my mouth and lean on Winnie for support as I began laughing my ass off. The previously intimidating dragons looked and sounded straight up ridiculous. Winnie and the other ghosts started laughing as well.
Thorondor landed on one of Kaiju’s heads and tilted his head in confusion. “Ruff?”
The fight between the two suitors escalated as they began using their razor, axe-like dorsal fins to duel. I nudged Sahara, “You sure are a popular lady eh?”
Sahara gave me a death glare. I put my hands up, “Hey, just because you’re popular doesn’t mean these guys are your type, right?”
“Chomp.” Sahara huffed in agreement.
“Let’s send these fellows away then.” I waved a hand at the ice dragon, “Dragon Tail, you can follow up with Stone Edge if they don’t get the message. Make sure they know they’d be better off looking for opportunities elsewhere.”
I wonder if Dragon Tail has similar effects irl to in game. How does it end a wild Pokemon encounter?
Sahara nodded, her tail began glowing a dragon indigo as she marched over to the drakes. The two paused and looked up at Sahara towering over them with an evil glint in her eye. One of them squeaked before Sahara whipped around and swatted them with her tail.
One of the drakes let out a loud, “ACK!” As the wind was knocked out of them and they were sent flying much further than Sahara would usually be able to hit them. One drake was able to right itself midair and landed on its feet, letting out a belligerent roar. The other crashed into a boulder, and while it was struggling to get back on its feet, the angry one opened its maw and formed a crackling ball of ice type energy.
I pointed at the aggressive Baxcalibur and shouted at Sahara, “Dragon Pulse!”
There was a squawk from Thorondor, and two boosted Dragon Pulses roared past me, slamming into the aggressive Baxcalibur and blasting it into the horizon Team Rocket style. The remaining drake gaped at Kaiju, and Sahara turned around with a “what the hell was that?” look on her face.
I turned around to stare at Kaiju, who still had both mouths open muppet-style, steam rolling off of his tongues.
“Ruff! Let!” Having been thrown from the teen dragon’s head, Thorondor hovered above him and angrily pecked his head tuft before flying over to use my shoulder as a perch instead.
“Uhhhh, well I guess that works.” I said, smoothing down the spiked feathers on the eaglet’s head.
Sahara turned to look at the remaining Baxcalibur, making it flinch in horror. The drake slowly backed away before fleeing the area like a bat out of hell, it nearly slipped a few times, but its ice adapted feet helped it just barely keep its footing.

Winnie patted Kaiju on the back, “well that’s one way of sending a message. good job kaiju.”
Kaiju puffed his chest out and nodded, “Zwei!”
“Those fellows have gotta be extra stupid, or extra brave to think they’d ever have a chance with our Queen Sahara.” Banette remarked, using her claws for a dramatic flair as she pointed at Sahara.
Haunter chuckled, “Hey, maybe they like female dragons who can easily crush them.”
I had to stifle a chuckle at the comment as the gas ghost ducked behind me to hide from Sahara’s desert glare.
Banette floated over to us and poked Haunter with one of her claws, “I think that’s just you self projecting.”
“For your information,” Haunter swatted her hand away, “I am a man of ordinary tastes.”
Banette folded her arms and nodded sarcastically, “Sure, you have very ordinary tastes.” Haunter growled and flicked a mini Shadow Ball at the doll ghost, who sliced it in half with one of her new claw items.
I left the two to bicker and collected everyone to get going. We passed by another male Baxcalibur not ten minutes after leaving, but it was quickly scared off by a barrage of ghost tag boosted Shadow Balls from the ghost trio. Mismagius almost blew herself up with an overinflated Shadow Ball, but she was able to tighten her control of the move and send it towards the unwelcome drake.
She was gonna have to practice controlling all the extra energy her ghost type moves were getting from the spell tags.
“You really sure you don’t want a Baxcalibur?” Haunter asked as we watched the ice dragon disappear behind a bunch of boulders. “It’s a free pseudo-legendary.”
I waved the idea away, “I am good with two pseudo-legendaries at the moment.” And I don’t think Sahara will tolerate another dragon trying to cozy up to her all the time.
Mismagius then piped up, “Despite what the guide says, I still find it strange that there are Baxcalibur so close to the main trail. Wouldn’t the ranger have warned us about it?”
Banette took out the copy of the trail guide she got yesterday and showed Mismagius one of the sections. “There actually is a warning here, Baxcalibur usually don’t come this close to the trail.” She pointed at another section, “This part tells trainers with fully grown female dragons to keep them in their Pokeballs unless they’d like to fight off drakes looking for a mate.”
“Well I doubt that’s going to be a problem for us.” I said. It’s basically free exp farming.
“what was the fin shaking about?” Winnie changed the subject.
“I think it’s a way of showing how healthy they are,” I answered, “because of how integral the Dorsal Fin is to a Baxcalibur. Wild Pokemon looking for a mate are going to choose the strongest partner they can so their young will be strong too, aka it’s natural selection.”
I rubbed my hands together, “Oooo, I wonder how courtships differ between different dragon species!” Is it just the usual fighting for mating rights? Or do they hoard gems or do a flying dance to show off? I bet Dragonite or Salamence fly around to show off to potential partners!
I excitedly patted my pocket for Rotom to come out, “Hey Rotom, look up how Baxcaliburs court, and Garchomps too.”
Always happy to research Pokemon biology, Rotom quickly fired up the Pokedex and searched up what I wanted, letting the Pokedex narrate what came up.
“Typical courtship behaviors for Baxcalibur will differ depending on whether a male is able to secure a territory or not. If they are, they will fiercely guard areas with the best food, water, and nesting resources to attract females to their territory. Those who aren’t strong enough to compete for prime real estate will be exiled to less desirable areas until the end of the mating season.
Drake Baxcalibur use their dorsal fins and the red scales around their claws to communicate things like their age, and overall health. They will use dorsal fin displays to try to impress females and to warn off any potential competitors. Fights generally consist of shoving and biting that then escalates into fin jousting, which can be fatal.
Garchomps court using gems and scale color. Males will become more colorful during mating season, which communicates how healthy they are. After obtaining the largest and shiniest gem he can, a male Garchomp will bring it to the female with the largest and most well-taken care of hoard. While a vibrant male shows that he is healthy, a female strong enough to defend a large hoard of precious gems is usually an indicator of good health.”
“So most dragon type species are unlikely to interbreed in the wild due to how they seek out slash, what qualities they look for in a suitable partner, huh?” I rubbed my chin, “I’d bet differences in when their mating seasons would also have a great impact on any possibility of interbreeding as well.”
The shiny rock part also reminds me of how male gentoo penguins propose. That’s pretty cute for a scary looking species like Garchomps.
Rotom happily beeped, and played a fun fact section, “Fun Fact: The genes that lead to certain species of male dragons developing a temporary scale vibrancy during the mating season also makes males of those species more likely to develop alternate pigmentations, more commonly known as shinies. The same phenomenon is found in many species of bird Pokemon and Pokemon species that used to have the dragon typing like Charizard.”
“Wait that’s super interesting! Does that mean bird and dragon Pokemon are somehow related?” I asked, “Or is it some sort of convergent evolution stuff? It’s definitely due to being related for Charizards, but what about the bird Pokemon?”
“Bzzt!” Rotom buzzed as it looked up more on the Pokedex. Thorondor sighed and flew up, taking Glados with him to do some more flight training. Winnie exchanged glances with the other ghosts.
Everyone was subjected to Rotom and I geeking out about Pokemon biology for the next hour. We had to pause a few times to deal with some more Baxcalibur, but it seemed that word spread among the ice dragons and they eventually stopped coming our way. That, or maybe because we got too close to the mountain?
Rotom and I would’ve gone on a joint theory rant about why there were so many normal-flying type birds (outside of meta reasons), but we stopped when we were waved down by a trainer in an ice specialist outfit, topped off by a Glaceon themed beanie.
I was immediately concerned by the sight of her singed clothes and torn pant legs, though she didn’t look injured other than a few light burns. What attacked her? I don’t think there are any fire type Pokemon in the area. Did another trainer attack her?
The trainer spoke in a slightly shaky and out of breath voice, “Hey, I’m so sorry to inconvenience you, but do you have any potions or burn heals you could spare?” She nervously glanced at Sahara.
I was already taking off my bag to grab some first aid items for her and any injured Pokemon she had, “Yeah of course!” I quickly handed her a full heal, a max potion, and handful of revives. “I have more if you need them.”
“Thank you so much!” The trainer said, quickly letting out two Pokemon, a Glaceon and a Snover, both were fainted and covered in burns and nasty bite marks.
I pulled out another full heal and max potion to use on the Snover while the ice specialist trainer worked on treating her Glaceon. Glados and Thoron flew back down, and Winnie informed them of what they missed. Haunter and Banette disappeared for a few minutes before reappearing in my shadow and informing me that there weren’t any other trainers or dangerous Pokemon in our immediate surroundings.
Once Glaceon and Snover’s injuries were as healed as we could get them to be, we used the revives to help them regain consciousness. Rufflet fluttered over to my bag and clumsily took out two sitrus berries for the ice types to nibble on.
I smiled and patted his head, “How thoughtful of you Thoron.” Sahara placed a firm foot on Kaiju’s back to prevent him from trying to steal the berries.
Glaceon made sure to nuzzle its trainer let her know it was alright before it took a bit of the berry. The ice specialist finally heaved a sigh of relief as she saw her Pokemon eating.
I handed her a burn heal, “Here, use these on your burns.”
“Thanks.” She took the burn heal and began spraying it on her her burns, and they quickly went from red and irritated to a more normal skin color.
I waited for her to finish applying the burn heal to the worst burns on her legs before asking, “What happened? Did another trainer do this?”
The trainer frowned and nodded, “There were a bunch of assholes in these bright orange clothes blocking the entrance to Frost Cavern.”
“don’t tell me it’s…” Winnie muttered, letting the sentence hang. Team Flare? It sure sounds like it.
“They wouldn’t let me in, and when I asked them why they just, they sicced a hoard of fire types on us.” The trainer slammed the burn heal onto the ground and then pointed to a ripped backpack and its scattered contents a little ways further up the trail, “One of their stupid Houndooms ripped my bag up and bit my phone in half, so I couldn’t even call for any help.”
“A-and, I don’t have a flying type, and I, I wasn’t expecting to have to deal with fire types here–” The trainer took a deep breath and wiped her eyes. Snover got up and waddled over to its trainer and tried to offer her part of its sitrus berry to soothe her. Glaceon licked her arm and leaned on her.
Mismagius grabbed a napkin from my bag and gently put it into the trainer’s hands. The trainer quietly thanked her, wiping her face. She patted Snover on the head, telling him to finish his berry, and that she was okay.
“Hey don’t worry, you can use my phone.” Rotom got the cue and zipped out of my pocket.
The ice specialist looked at Rotom in surprise, “A flying phone?”
Rotom’s screen flashed with a cute Meowth smugly nodding gif, and then a silly Froakie winking gif. That got the trainer to giggle, and her bad mood lifted a bit.
I found out this trainer’s name was Layla when she gave her name and Trainer ID to the ranger who answered the phone. They informed her that a ranger was five minutes out and would come to pick her up and bring her to a Pokemon center.
Lyla took a deep breath and got up, dusting the snow off of her pants before returning Glaecon and Snover. She offered a hand to me, “Thanks for helping me out, I’m sure you heard from the phone call, but my name is Layla.”
I shook her hand and smiled, “Azalea. And really, it’s no problem. We all gotta look out for each other afterall.”
Layla smiled and nodded, then her eyebrows slightly furrowed, and she asked, “Are you heading to Frost Cavern?”
“Yep.” I confirmed, “Actually, while we’re on that subject, can you tell me how many guys in red you saw?”
The ice specialist seemed to realize what I was planning and faltered, “Ummm…I think we should leave the rangers to handle it Azalea. Those guys don’t fight fair, they’re pretty shady…”
I shrugged, “They sure are shady if they’re letting their Pokemon attack trainers. All the better that someone whoops their asses for they attack someone else.”
Then a wide grin spread across my face, “And who said I was gonna fight fair against them?” I pointed at my crew, mainly Sahara and Kaiju, “It’ll take more than a hoard of fire types to take out my team.”
“Zwei!” Kaiju’s heads shouted in agreement. Sahara stomped a foot, making the ground shake.
Layla didn’t seem fully convinced, but she sighed and relented, “Uhh, there were only two of them at the entrance, and both of them had six fire type Pokemon. They said something about making sure no one disturbed their team leader, so there’s probably more. That’s all I know.”
“Gotcha.” I gave her a thumbs up.
A Talonflame screeched signalling the arrival of the ranger that the dispatcher sent. There were two Talonflames, actually. The firebirds kicked up a bit of snow, and a strong gust of wind almost blew my hat off as they landed. A ranger was riding one of the Talonflames, the other had an empty saddle, presumably for Layla to ride.
After confirming our identities, the ranger helped Layla into one of the Talonflame saddles and sternly told me to take one of the other trails, or to wait until the situation had been resolved. As of now, Frost Cavern was closed until the rangers could deal with the problem at hand.
I saluted him, “Gotcha.”
The ranger and his Talonflames gave me a hard look, they didn’t seem convinced. “I’m serious, okay?”
I shrugged and put my hands up, “Hey, you guys are the ones being paid to deal with this shit. I’m not exactly in a rush to go anywhere.”
He seemed convinced, and the ranger mounted his Talonflame and said something to the radio hanging on his jacket. Layla raised an eyebrow at me and mouthed good luck before they took off.
I waved at them and waited until they disappeared from sight.
“it’s those team flare bastards.” Winnie said as soon as they were gone.
“Yep.” I agreed.
“What are they doing here of all places?” Banette demanded, she slashed the side of an ice boulder, creating a massive gash. The ghosts all turned to me for any theories or explanations.
“Well, there’s an abomasite in Frost Cavern.” I suggested, “I think there’s another ice type related one either on this route or also in the caverns, but…I dunno, creating this much trouble for one or two mega stones? That doesn’t really make sense.”
“But they’re valuable, right?” Haunter said, “Maybe they’re valuable enough for Team Flare to do something like this.”
Mismagius shook her head, “I don’t think so. Surely it would be easier to hire some trainers to find the mega stone for them under the pretense of research. Both the Kalos Regional Lab, and Lysandre Labs have very good reputations and government backing. It would be an easy enough task for them to hire a trainer to find it for them instead of sending a team of belligerent buffoons.”
I sighed as I brainstormed any plausible theories, “Yeah. I don’t think they’re dumb enough to shut down an entire route for something like that. There’s gotta be something more to this. I wish it were as simple as getting a mega stone.”
“what’s the plan then Az?” Winnie asked, he waved his hand, making our shadows and footprints disappear, “i’m assuming we’re going stealth mode.”
I nodded, “Yep.” Then I turned to Sahara and Kaiju and pulled out their Pokeballs, “I’m returning you guys.”
Sahara nodded, and Kaiju said “Zwei zwei!” As they were absorbed back into their ultra and dusk balls.
“You too Thoron,” I said, taking out Thorondor’s luxury ball, “Glados will be our air support for the time being, and the ghosts will scout.”
“Ruff!” The eaglet didn’t seem happy about not being included, he pecked my shin to further indicate his displeasure.
“Ow!” I rubbed my shin and moved out of pecking range. Winnie stepped between us and blocked another peck from Thorondor.
“you’ll get to participate when we need to fight the bad guys thoron,” Winnie said, “think of it as skipping the boring sneaking around phase.”
The eaglet rolled his eyes and gave us a sarcastic sigh, then he used his wing to signal for me to return him, so I did. Then I pointed up at Glados, “Stay on high alert.” The AI Pokemon glitched and its head begins to slowly rotate, scanning our surroundings.
I pointed at the ghosts, “Scout ahead, don’t engage in any fights, and report back to me on anything you guys find.”
Banette and Haunter saluted, Winnie pointed at Mismagius, “You’re on translation duty. Banette, you’re in charge of the attack group. Haunter, you’re in charge of disarming the Team Flare guys.”
I looked at my map as the ghosts disappeared into the ground where shadows usually would be. We were about 20 to 30 minutes away from the entrance to Frost Cavern, aka we were approximately 25 minutes away from kicking some Team Flare ass.
