The start of my fall

It was a day as any another day, I jumped out of my bed agitated and a bit sad, I dreamed about my time in the cell 3 years ago, I went to have a quick bath and finished preparing for my commute, so after finishing my morning coffee I went to the window, and saw the beautiful city, giant towers of concrete and glass, everything organized full of blue and white, with a towers that elevates to the stars, then I was ready to go to “the job” so I put my coat on and arrived at 8:30 am.

When I arrived to the gate of my job they passed me through the scanner as always and the guards make sure I wasn’t holding nor bringing anything that could ruin the progress that my Team and I have made over the time of two and a half years.

After that moment that I always found uncomfortable, I entered the building, feeling alive with all of the scientist with brilliant ideas, but also filled with eyes of paranoia and secrecy between everyone, I went to my desk after passing by the main hall, and prepared a part of my paperwork, mainly petitions of budget, materials and use of other technology already developed or under development within the building, when suddenly Richard Locksimov, who is the highest in the building, appeared by my office, he approached me and asked for advances on my work, thinking on my words wisely I said:

  •   its going… well, I have been doing considerable progress, but I might need some extra funds to finish the prototype.

  •

I said with a frighten voice seeing him directly in the eyes

  •   I see no problem with that, what is this progress that you have made

  •   They were the encryption of the frequency, a stable connection between the 2 portals, transport of inorganic matter, but I still need to do some experiments with inorganic matter and living beings.

  •   I see, then I’ll give you the funds, but I required that you give me a report of all of the advancements that you and your team have made to this day, at the end of the day, we have to support our most valuable asset inside of the company.

After hearing him he left without looking back, so I started to think on all of the ongoing problems and the experiments that are still in the works, I had almost all figured out, not only because of me, but from my colleagues, Jimmy (circuit specialist), Regina (designer and materials specialist), Francis (Chemist), and Tobias (Maintenance chief and blacksmith) if it wasn’t for them nothing of this wouldn’t be possible.

It has been 2 months since, the portal was ready, it was tested un multiple ways, passing the test of living beings and ultra complex devices being transported, and finally after 2 years and 7 months, it was ready, and so we prepared for the final test, presenting the prototype to the higher ups, we were on front of Julian Hersimov, besides our boss Richard, and also other directors inside the corporation, all from the globe and different places.

Then with the nerves up my head I started the portal with the rest of my team, and saw how the exit portal automatically synchronized with the entrance, and after a short sequence the portals stabilized, Julian was the first one to cross, and after seeing how he safely was on the other side of the room they all began to cross one by one, after all passed we shut down the portal, all of them were left stunned by our work seeing us with grace, and after a short silence they started clapping to us they commented how we revolutionized transport forever, and wanted to go as fast as possible to patent it and getting it to market, I permitted it without resistance, thinking of all of the good thing it would do to the world.

After 3 months waiting for a response from the global patent agency it arrived, it came in form of a letter to the building, written on it it had the good notice that the our prototype, and so I gave the cart to Richard, he was excited for the letter, and decided to call Julian to notify him, of course it was immediately attended, I even heard him laughing of joy through the phone, I was about to leave but Richard detained me, asking if I could stay for a moment, after about 5 minutes he hanged up the phone, and started talking to me.

  •   We need to make the prototype better, it’s useful, I don’t doubt it, but the sheer amount of electricity it uses its a monstrosity, even for our standards, we need to refine the design, we need to make it more efficient, we cannot use it yet.

  •   I thinking of were to upgrade it, I just need more time and resources

  •

  •   I know it already, but the trillion dollar question is this: how much time do you need?

  •

  •   I estimate about 3 to 9 months approximately, we need that time at a maximum, I don’t know if there’s any other form of generation of energy that’s powerful enough to power the portal without being wired to the power network of the city, we need it to be compact to be easily made and transported.

  •   I’ll give you a year to do that, this include the time for the refinement and to prepare you, your team and the functional prototype for an investors presentation, do not destroy this project, because after all your career its on the line.

Just as I expected, they want the prototype to be even better, I went to my team, y had a meeting with them, gave them the news and all went to their respective offices, saying they would think about it, so I went home it was late like 9 or 10 pm, feeling realized and, after so much time, I once again fell completed, but the nerves slowly devoured this great feeling, being replaced with emptiness and nothing more than emptiness.
